BAL - is it AstLinux? - Nah, it's big-assed Linux!

Hello everyone,

We've got a new SAIL/Asterisk release for you to try and it's a bit different.  If the mood takes you, this one will run without disks.  Architecturally, it works very much like AstLinux, however it's massive by comparison and needs half a Gig of RAM and a 2Gb flash card so one of the guys nicknamed it BAL, "Big Assed Linux", and it seems to have stuck.

If you don't want to go to bother of installing SME onto a Compact Flash card, BAL will still give you a few advantages.  It goes like lightning when  you load all of the busy stuff into RAM :-) - speaking of which, don't try running it in memory without about 512Mb of RAM.

BAL has also got a nice PBX personality Dump/Restore facility which works on USB sticks and is dead good for backing up and restoring your PBX.

Anyway, you can download a copy from the usual place...

ftp://81.149.154.14/Pre-Releases/selintra-sail-2.1.14-447.noarch.rpm

There's also a write-up in the docs pages on how to install SME onto a CF Card and how BAL works.  You can find it here...

http://www.selintra.com/docs/cgi-bin/view/Main/DocChapter2514

-447 is very new and it does a lot of work under the covers, moving memory around and so forth, so you should treat it as an alpha release for the moment.  Please spin it up and let us know how you get on with it.

Kind Regards

Selintra
