"Simple" Web Monitor?
« on: January 10, 2007, 04:31:22 AM »
Long story short, a friend of mine had cancer.  He sent out regular e-mail updates to several people (couple hundred actually) and on more than one occasion over the years his laptop would take a dive and I would help him re-build it.  One time he lost all of his e-mail and addresses - this needless to say was a pain in the ass.  ;(  I thought that we might be able to "centralize" his mails and distribution list(s) into a centralized computer so as not to lose anything in the event that the laptop took a dive again, plus - since he was spending quite a bit of time in hospitals, he would be able to get to his mail in real time via a web interface.  I set him up with an old machine running SME 6.01 and the MailMan listserv.  This worked great for the last year or so that he was with us.  Needless to say - he has been gone for a little over a year or so now...  I recently ran into his wife (widow) and after some small talk / chit chat - she asked me about possibly coming over to "take a look at that server thing" that we set up for him...  she has a 14 year old boy who isn't getting any younger and is, well - getting interested in what boys are interested in...   :mrgreen:   The boy has friends over to the house regularily and they are all about the same age +/- a year or so...  She isn't really ~to concerned~ and doesn't think that they are doing / surfing to anyplace that might be all that bad per 'se BUT....  she would like to be able to monitor the boys web surfing if possible.

This would have to be something really transparent, easy to use, and non-invasive to client machines.  She isn't a computer jockey like 99% of us hanging out in these forums... she knows very basic stuff about using a pc.  If I could point her to an address at her local gateway machine that is running <something> that presents her with a simple interface that she can use to see what web sites the boys are visiting that would be great.

I'm hoping for something that would present her with (again) basics Ie;

http://www.yankees.com
http://nfl.com
http://google.com
http://playboy.com
http://baseball.com
etc....

Obviously she would zero in on the playboy hit.

I figure that we'll nuke the existing machine and re-load it with current (7.01 now I reckon) SME.  Any ideas or suggestions on a contrib that might be suitable for this??

Appreciate it guys.  ;)

What about a keyloger on her computer? Wouldn't that be better. And she could see some screenshots from the program.

dansguardian will content filter the sites and block access to them if the threshold score is exceeded.
See this howto, but there is a newer version of the rpms at dungog.net, search the forums for install & config tips for the newer version, but the old version still works OK on sme7.x

Dansguardian also logs every site that goes through it.

Thanks guys...  I'll take a look at Dansguardian then.  It is purely passive monitoring (if I understand her correctly) that she wants to be able to do @present.   I'm guessing that should she wind up getting an eye full of interesting sites that the boys have been going to...  then we'll explore employing blocking.

Well dansguardian will block the sites for her so you'll have to disable blocking and you should be able to view browsed links only.
