/dev/nst0: No such device or address tape newbie question
« on: November 21, 2006, 09:17:17 PM »
I'm hoping someone can help.  I'm truly a newbie with linux.  I kind of inherited the support of a SME server 7.x.  I got a call saying tape wasn't backing up.  When I looked at the message it said:

/dev/nst0: No such device or address
Remember to load the backup tape!

So the info I have and have done.  This is a Dell 830 Poweredge, has a 100T Travan40 tape drive.  I have in my hands an empty cd case that says Dell Powervault manual and drivers....  empty case...

I have checked everywhere for info...  Some of the pieces I've tried from the server and their responses are..

#modprobe /ide-scsi -Answer No such deivce or address
#mt -f /dev/nst0 status -A. No such device or address

#/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi -A. no response, back to #

#rmmod ide-tape - A. ide_tape does not exist in /proc/modules
#rmmod ide-scsi -A. Device or resource busy
#insmod ide-scsi- A. can't read 'ide-scsi': No such file or directory

Seeing as I don't have a driver, finding it on Dell hasn't proved any help, they refer to after installing from the cd.  No place I can find to download.  Any thoughts from the pro's would be greatly appreciated of what I can try next.

If I'm in the wrong forum, please excuse my intrusion, but I don't really know where else to get this out to someone...

Thanks, Terri

There are various issues with this. Whether the problems I have had are related I really don't know.

There are other posts on tapes - have a search thought the forums.

Have a look in the bugtracker as well.

John,
Thanks for the input.  I will check into the link you provided.  I did search was why all the commands I tried and their responses.  I will check bugtracker also.  Just wondering why it just quit working.  Wouldn't think any updates that might have been downloaded would be applied until the server was rebooted.  HMMM..  Thanks again.
