Got it;~)
I've never used a USB2 drive before now (only FireWire400 boxes).
So I followed your install USB box HOWTO at...
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs \ //dmay/smeserver/7.x/testing/smeserver-dar2/smeserver-usb-disk-howto.htm
...to install the new USB2 kit (SME7).
BTW your thread starter's listing for the above isn't active (ie no URL).
What a good clear instructive HOWTO, my thanks, you forgot
to say "breathe now" so I was a little cyanotic near the end.
I fell down the gotcha leaving the USB box mounted afterwards and so
couldn't start the subsequent backup run (as it was already mounted).
Q&A that you might consider adding to that HOWTO:
* How do you get the second, third etc drive added?
* Is there a helpful listing command to see the drive's parameters?
* How do ensure/confirm everything is running with USB2 (not USB1)?
* Is it OK to just rip the USB box off its power and data cords
ie in the case of user panic in the face of a fire/flood/disaster?
So, yes, the USB2 box does the job. My expectations were considerably
higher than what it (the USB2 box as a local drive for smeserver-dar2)
seems to have delivered. Perhaps 'things' need more configuring...
to put it simply: it's 'expensive' in use and it's not that quick either.
This comes into the category of
tried this and it didn't work so will
now go away and prepare some bugzilla threads (URLs added later).

The
tried this and it didn't work stuff is now in bugzilla #1978...
