Configuring Windows 2000 on LAN
« on: February 05, 2002, 04:01:51 PM »
Loaded SME 5 as "server and gateway - dedicated" accepting SME configuration defaults but using DHCP (sending ethernet address as clientr identifier) and using a dynamic DNS service where I'm registered.  I can connect from server to Internet via cable modem fine.  However, I can't communicate with server from Windows 2000 machine on LAN.  The server is providing DHCP service to the LAN.  Anybody had trouble with this?  DHCP and DNS are set to automatic in Windows 2000 and don't have any problem directly connected to cable modem.  What settings in Windows 2000 should I check or change?  Should I try server w/o DHCP service to LAN and set Windows with static IP address?

I believe that there is an issue with your host name - it is more than 12 characters. You may want to do a search of these forums to confirm.

Hello Scott,

Question: do you use SME 5.0 or SME 5.1.2 (the new download)?
Issue: SME 5.0 doesn't work with Windows2000 professional and SME 5.1.2 does!

My settings
- SME 5.1.2: windows workgroupname (is domain name for windows2000)
- SME 5.1.2: roaming profiles: yes
- Windows2000: first login as an administrator, connect in 'settings' > 'control panel' (I hope I used the right words, because I use a Dutch version of w2k) with domain xxx (whatever you have as workgroupname on your SME 5.1.2) as admin + password. Then I hope you will see: 'welcome at domain xxx'.
- SME 5.1.2: youre netlogon.bat doesn't need a 'h-drive' anymore, because w2k automatic makes a 'z-drive'

Greatings from Holland,

Marnix

Thanks Des, RequestedDeletion, and Manix.

I will assume based on Manix's suggestion that SME 5.0, which I'm trying to use, will not work with W2K pro at all, so I will load SME 5.1.2 and if that does not work, I'll play around with the Windows Host Name as Des suggests.

I'm grateful for the help!
