Hello all,

I have been using some of the old versions of sme, then took a break for a couple of years.

I have installed sme 7.1 and having some problems with the CD/DVD backup.

I can burn fine with a scsi cd writer, but not an ide. (scsi emulation?)
I can burn fine with sme 6.5, but some things seemed to have changed in 7.1 ie grub instead of lilo,  I have looked at all the CD backup posts, and enabled ide-scsi emulation module, if i type "lsmod" it is loaded, but i have noticed there is not device sda in the /dev directory - there is in 6.5.

The cdutils-backup was an old contrib which is not supported on SME 7.x I would recommend removing (or fixing the contrib if you know how)

To uninstall the cd-utils rpms you could have done the following (without needing a full rebuild), for all rpms you installed.

rpm -e cd-utils
rpm -e e-smith-cd-utils
rpm -e dvdrtools
rpm -e Cdrecord
rpm -e mkisofs

Since last post, I have done the following (done only to get some kind of standard procedure going here)

1) rebuild SME 7.1 from scratch
2) Performed full update
3) Installed

cd-utils-0.3.2-1.noarch.rpm
e-smith-cd-utils-0.2.1-1.noarch.rpm
mkisofs-1.10-11.i386.rpm < it did not install, as newer version already present.

4) lsmod |grep ide < to make sure the ide-scsi emulation is loaded(which is is no after standard install)
5) modprobe ide-scsi
6) lsmod |grep ide < to make sure it has loaded (which it has )
7) try to burn some data and get this :

Tried a few times - to make sure i was hitting the buttons correctly

so it looks like it is having problems with scsi emulation still?? or am i missing something here??



I have also moved the cdrom to secondary slave to see if that helps, but no joy

if i do a cdrecord -scanbus i get this

Tried a few times - to make sure i was hitting the buttons correctly

so it looks like it is having problems with scsi emulation still?? or am i missing something here??



I have also moved the cdrom to secondary slave to see if that helps, but no joy

if i do a cdrecord -scanbus i get this

Although I was initailly not trying to run any script, as i would like to make site admins (who know nothing about linux, just windows) resposiable for there backup schedules, so was looking for a simple way so they can configure when backups are run through server-manager.

can anyone please confirm that cd_utils / cdrecord method does not work on sme 7.1??  if not I will have to go back to 6.5, as i can prove it works there...

Hi there guys,

I think i have sorted it, and this is what i did....

Now i know all these steps are not required, just what i did to get it working, and in what order...

1) Installed SME 7.1 from scratch.
2) cd-utils-0.3.2-1.noarch.rpm
3) Installed e-smith-cd-utils-0.2.1-1.noarch.rpm
4) Updated to 7.1.3, via server-manager

try it now and it will fail on opening scsi driver

i then typed in

ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/pg0

went and burn a cd and worked fine!  


I am yet to test with "cd backup" but i looks promising...



so it must be something to do with the link above, as there is no /dev/pg0 (which is what everything looks for) in SME7.1, but there was in 6.5..

Can i also thank everyone that helped me previously, it is nice to give a little back to this great community!!

Have you looked at the DAR2 contrib?

I think you'll find it will do the basics + so much more.... without you having to play at the command line.
