Windows Xp with SME server
« on: June 27, 2006, 07:40:47 PM »
I'm using SME server for about 2 years now and it works fine. We have 6 computers using SME server as a fileserver/gateway.  All computers are connected to the SME server via a switch (3Com Officeconnect dual speed switch 16 plus) and the second networkcard in the SME server is connected to a Speedtouch ADSL modem. Only 1 computer has problems.
It can get on the internet without problems and has normal speed accessing webpages. This computer can also see the files on the SME server, but when I want to access a fileor copy it or whatever it starts doing the action, but after a while comes with a error message saying it is not able to access the file. Small file (<200kB) will work, but slowly. Bigger files won't work. I already changed the network cable, but this would not help. All of the computers are working with Windows XP Pro.

Can anyone please help me.

Thanks,

 Ronald

This could be network card problem on this workstation. Try to force it to 10Mbit speed and see if it does stable transfers.

I've seen it few times that bad NIC transfers small files from the Internet fast, but chokes on the bigger LAN transfers. Replacing NIC or sometimes windows drivers for it helps. Many of them were 3COM builtin chips.

I've also seen this type of issue resolved w/ a bios update.

naming of I-bays
« Reply #5 on: August 21, 2006, 01:19:39 PM »
While reading through the online SME-manual I noticed the name of I-bay's may not contain this character :  -, for instance data-ronald.
I checked this on my server and saw I used that character. How come that SME-server (version 6.0) allows me to create such a name. When creating the I-bay there's no warning about this.

Is this perhaps causing my problem mentioned before?

Solved the problem.

It seems that the onboard gigabit network card of this problem pc cannot work together with my 3com switch(Office Connect 16)

I switched of the onboard nic and put a pci nic (intel 100MB) and this works perfect.

I checked another pc exactly the same as the problem pc and this one has the same problem.

So maybe in the near future I have to replace the switch.

Thanks for the responce anyway.
