Hi Guys,
I have got a 5.5 server  with a single 40gb hdd
running nonstop without errors from late 2002.

(ok I know 5.5..... i'll soon upgrade to 7 )

The server has an ADAPTEC  STD2401 20X40G SCSI tape backup
system and the tapes are dds4 20x40 tapes with a ADAPTEC ASC 29160KIT SCSI card.

SME User manager shows.

Currently your configuration and data files total approximately 24Gb.
Currently your hard disk  contains 31Gb of data.

fglex Backups now have an error
----------------------------
DUMP: 80.10% done at 810 kB/s, finished in 2:00am
buffer (writer): write of data failed: No space left on device
bytes to write=10240, bytes written=-1, total written   13648040K
  DUMP: Broken pipe
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Looks like the tape is full   "No space left on device" .  How can this be?
Is there something I've missed in the initial setup of the hardware back in 2002.....Help guys

You tapes can fit natively (no compression) 20 GB. With compression its up to 40GB, depends on how well your files can be compressed. Some multimedia files like jpg and MPEG already have very high rate of compression and cannot be compressed any further.
Your options would be to clean up and remove some of the unneeded files from the server or get a larger capacity backup device.
Another alternative is to use more advanced backup program that allows for differential/incremental backups and rethink your backup strategy.

You've overestimated the backup capacity of your tapes.

Hi Boris,
Thank you for your quick reply. I had a strong idea what you are saying was the reason.  Thanks again I do appreciate your comments and time.
