Block local internet usage during certain hours
« on: March 20, 2006, 10:41:58 AM »
Hey all,

Need some help or suggestions to block internet access during certain hours of the day, preferably manually so that it can be activated if need be, for people working here as not enough work is getting done.

Thanks

Ben

thanks for the quick response, I am obviously using sme 7 and that howto is for 5 and 6, will it still work...

I tried using the howto on dungog.net "yum install dansguardian smeserver-dansguardian" but I keep getting :

That's why I said to get the newer and more appropriate rpms for your sme7 OS.
The HOWTO is generally still appropriate.

Try these
dansguardian-2.8.0.6-1.2.el4.rf.i386.rpm
dungog-blacklists-0.1-12.noarch.rpm

from here

That is a commercial package that adds a nice server manager panel (etc) and you will have to pay dungog money for that one.

Look at the
exceptioniplist
This contains a list of client IPs who you want to bypass the filtering. For example, the network administrator's computer's IP.
and
bannediplist
IP addresses of client machines to disallow web access to. Only put IP addresses here, not host names.

Please give us feedback how it went on sme7
Thanks
Ray

Actually you can also download and install
smeserver-dansguardian-1.2-4.noarch.rpm

It looks like it does a bit of the config that was required before in the howto.

I'm sure there is another at cost package that provides the server manager GUI (dungog-dansguardian).

You will also need to edit both
/etc/dansguardian/dansguardian.conf
and
/etc/dansguardian/dansguardianf1.conf

I know that this sound silly but it works 8-)  . If you just want to have internet connection on or off during certain hours, just get yourself a light timer and plug in your cable/ DLS modem to it. Set the timer to be off the hours you want and boom, there it is. Very easy and quick fix, no configuration to make. :hammer:
Now, this will not work if you are also using your SME server as a web/ mail server.
