Traffic monitoring
« on: January 05, 2002, 04:08:25 AM »
Hello,

I was looking for traffic monitoring tool. E-smith monitor looks a little what i'm looking for, but the eth0 and eth1 interface needs to be more user specific, like a special line for 192.168.1.93 and for 192.168.1.142 etc.

The monitor doesn't need to be that graphical....

Anyone has a idea for me?

 Many thanks,

Alan,

How do i install mrtg?

I downloaded:
mrtg-2.9.17.-1.rh6.i386.rpm
libgd-1.3-4.i386.rpm
gd-1.3-6.i386.rpm

Problem is the "gd" tool it needs. This should be lower or equil to version 1.3.9, but i have version 1.8.3-7 already installed, and this is needed.

Any idea?

 Thanks,

Check out this contributed HowTo for install instructions.
http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/contrib/mrtg-howto.htm

I know the HowTo is talking about monitoring CISCO routers but at least you will get the idea of how to use and install.

Just to get back on this...

I know this is set up to read traffic of cisco-routers and stuff, but it should also be working on other machines since it is just sending packages to an IP-address right?

Now, somehow I can't get it to work, because as I soon as I get to step 5 of the process (http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/contrib/mrtg-howto.htm), it gives me a huge ammount of errors (see below).

Do I have to make adjustments to the create-mrtg file? O do I have to change
some other things too?

The effect of all this is that I can access http://192.168.1.1/mrtg/10003 (for example), and it will display some results but no pictures too (see http://wietsew.dyndns.org/mrtg/10003 for an example).

The error below is JUST an example, it gives these errors on EVERY IP try!

Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance!
