Cannot establish VPN
« on: March 09, 2006, 10:38:16 PM »
I have established a VPN connection to my SME server before, but I'm obviously missing something now.  I have my PPTP clients set to 2 and have enabled VPN access for a couple of my users.  When I setup the VPN connection on an XP box and try to connect, the connection fails with error 619 on the XP box.  My SME messages log shows the following lines just before the connection is closed:

Quote
CTRL: Got a SET LINK INFO packet with standard ACCMs
GRE: read(fd=6,buffer=80559a0,len=8260) from network failed: status = -1 error = Protocol not available
CTRL: GRE read or PTY write failed (gre,pty)=(6,5)

I am using 6.01 in server only mode.  The network is behind a Linksys router and I have forwarded ports 1723 and 47 to the SME box.  I also forward ports for email, http and https, all of which work properly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

widman

Search is your friend,

as per below

You need to setup you router to forward TCP 1723, UDP 500, and protocol 47 to the sme box
see

for general reference, and quite a few other posts if you care to search say on gre packets or VPN

What Windows OS/update are you using ?

I always try searching first but missed the links you found.  I probably should have searched on the error message.

I thought UDP 500 was for IPSec pass through and I am using PPTP.  In any case forwarding it did not help.

I tried setting up a VPN connection to my SME box at home and succeeded in connecting to the server.  The main difference between the two setups is the router.  My home system uses a Netgear router and the problematic system uses a Linksys router.  I upgraded the firmware on the Linksys last summer and never tried using VPN afterwards.  I may try another router just to eliminate that possibility.

Any other ideas?

I ended up getting a new router and VPN works with only port 1723 forwarded to the SME box.  I guess something in the firmware upgrade messed up PPTP pass through on the Linksys router.
