Cannot Get DNS to work
« on: February 16, 2006, 08:45:19 PM »
Hi

I want to be able to host an internet domain name. I dont particularly want to pay for registration. is there anything i can do to setup DNS on an SME Server

btw i can connect to the sme services by typing in the ip address but i am only 15 years of age and this can be a real pain

Thanks Supershark

DNS doesn't work without registration. You can't avoid those fees.

supershark,

Basically Charlie is of course right ...
if you want to host a  .com  .net . org -domain or whatever you have to spend money on that.

But you can get yourself a "free domain" by registering with one of the dynamic DNS providers
supported by SME out of the box most notably dyndns.org and yi.org.
... you connect your "host" to the internet over your DSL or Cable internet provider -with a dynamic ip...
... you then will be able to "host at home" with url's like "supershark.homeip.net" and "supershark.is-a-chef.com" and more...

Here you go:
 1) Register i.e. select an account name and password
(at dyndns.org ?)
2) Select among the free urls available
(just search a little. Look for "Account" and "Add Dynamic DNS Host") and add "supershark007" or something similar (see below).
 3) At a new SME setup enter the three items needed
 i) select your servername according to dyndns registration:
new servername  (like: supershark007.homeip.net)
when asked for dyndns enter:
ii) (dyndns) account name  (like: supershark007)
 iii) (dyndns) password (supersharkspassword_for_dyndnsaccount)

...this about "sums it up".

Happy learning

Regards
Reinhold

P.S.: Please do not modify too much on the basically safe SME
...we don't want you to become a source of spam and virii    ;-)

I think I've got something wrong

www.icl.homeip.net is my domain for now till I figure out how this all works

I have followed your instructions, and setup the SME server accordingly

Can someone please check my site www.icl.homeip.net to see if this is working, I can only seem to access locally?
I've allowed public access to just about everyting I could find on the SME server

webmail same issue only on local machines, but I can send and recieve mail after setting up dyndns, and also using my isp's smtp.comcast.net server to sent mail, but can only access webmail locally.

I realize this is an almost duplicated post I've made in another section, however it appears to be related to this similar subject.

Please advise?

Thanks

Thanks

I'll try this on my server to see what happens
