Hi,

Sorry about crossposting, but this really belongs here I think.

A vmware clientmachine of sme7.0pre3 is available on the mirrors.
You can use this vmware host for development or testing for instance
It should end up here and on other mirrors:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/hanscees/

see also:
http://smeserver.sourceforge.net/sme70/sme70/Manual/DeveloperHowtos?v=1ju

for some howtos on this. This www page is temporary by the way. It will be merged into the developers docu for sme7.

Hanscees,

I've setup SME server 7.0 pre4 on my VMware Workstation (5.5).
Thing I discovered is that SME 7 won't find a VMWare SCSI disk.
When I chose for an IDE disk in VMWare, installation succeeded succesfully.
Yet I still want to use one of my external USB disks as an extra disk for SME.
Any idea how to manage that ?

regards, Ruud

No scsi is correct yes. The drivers are not in rhe4 I think.
I have no idea howto use external drivers on an vmware wit rhe4, sorry. Perhaps others here know. Else you might try vmware forums.

Hi,
I found there is a bug at Centos site. However using lsi driver works fine for me (do not chose standard linux at first virtual machine stage)

just uploaded vmwarepre4.

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/hanscees/

see also here for howto use it to make rpms and so on:
http://smeserver.sourceforge.net/sme70/sme70/Manual/DeveloperHowtos?v=1ju

By the way if you want to up/download files to such a vmware machine you can:
- use ftp
- use sftp (http://winscp.net for windows) , first switch on ssh in manager panel, then you can drag and drop (if host and client machines are in the same ip-subnet of course)
- make iso file, mount in host system (daemon toolz for windows will do the trick at http://www.daemon-tools.cc/) connect iso to vmware-machine and copy from cd to disk.

Did you install vmware-tools in these VMs?

I had some issues setting up 2 VM in vmware-server-beta. First, installation of the tools needs extra tweeks in sme configuration file to let it load vmxnet/vmnics instead of pcnet32 driver. Then the vmware-guestd service have some strange behaviour when the system is under heavy loads, thus resulting in a freeze and/or heartbeat report of less than 20%. May you confirm these repports?

I'd also like some help while installing vmware-server-beta on a SME7pre4 physical host. There seem to be no way to let vmware-serverd load properly and bridging working on physical interfaces.

Also, the default firewalling template in SME seems almost impossible to edit in a manner to handle a third interface (vmnet* for instance). Do you think someone would like to work in a contrib to support vmware-server running on SME7 machines, inclueding service and config wrapping, integration of vmware-mui in the server-manager and the creation of a firewall config editor panel?

No, no vmware tools. Why would you need those? sme has no x-server so vmware tools are useless?

VMWare tools are not only an X driver!

They include an accelerated network driver, wich can really improve transfers, and the vmhgfs to access the host' shared folders.

And it's also a monitoring daemon, wich is absolutelly necessary when running in vmware-server and ESX/GSX, cuz it let you see how the vm's running, if any problem or performance issue may occur, and wich also let you drive the vm from the MUI.

VMware tools are really a must, you cannot seriously release images without em.

Installing a kickstarted distro in vmware isn't of a real pain, it had to be done but it would be nice to see someone doing it proprely, taking part of what vmware has to offer.

I am working on getting a stable VM in vmware-server, with tools for monitoring and scripting purpose, and I almost got something usable. It's currently running on a production server since wednesday. I'm also working on a downgraded VM for use on GSX and ESX but I'm waiting for my vmtn subscription update to get an official GSX3 toolkit. And I will release it if I succeed, but I'm still looking for more feedback from guys who really use vmware as its best, not just slapping an iso in vmware and pressing <enter>

For now, relative unstability in vmware-server-beta may be due to the load my physical server has to handle, and simply because the virtualizer is still in beta stage. But tools have a strange behavior due to some specificities in SME, like the module configuration (I had to edit the main configuration file to force loading of vmnics instead of pcnet32 for network adapters), the vmware-guestd service, wich doesn't run through "runsv" by default and seems to not like when forced to load with it.

At last, the vmhgfs module provides an access to the host'fs, but we'd have to forward the edited fstab to it's template equivalence in order to keep it mounted permantently.

IMHO the template system makes things really painfull when using such 3rd party software, so we have twho possibilities : build a manually customized image (what i'm doing) or trying to work together in creating an edited version of the vmware-config-tools.pl to match sme' specificities. Thus would also be a good starting point in letting vmware-GSX or server run on a SME host.

So as you can see i'm not dictating anyone what to do, i'm already working on it and submitting new ideas. But as I use vmware and SME in a production environment, i cannot afford to do just half the work, and the hardest part is still to be validated and/or done (depending on tools' version)

sme7.0rc2 network problem
« Reply #13 on: May 08, 2006, 12:17:50 AM »
Hi hanscees

I have a strange problem with sme7.0rc2 virtual machine.
My configuration is:

Intel p4 1.7
ram 1024
hd 300 ide
geforce
two network card 3com 3c905B
Windows xp pro
Vmware 5.5 (last release)
ETHERNET ADSL MODEM connected to second interface

I have a lot of virtual machine (Fedora C3, Centos 4.3 and Window 2003.....) that I use from long time without any problem.

With above os I got internet access through ICS provided by windows xp.
Both NAT and bridged configuration work perfectly.

With SME after tens of attempts I'm not still able to have internet access.
I tried sme server in "server only mode" and "gateway mode" both but, although I CAN PING xp network interface,  it seems that sme server isn't able to works with xp ics.
For example:
ping 192.168.134.1
PING 192.168.134.1 (192.168.134.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.134.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=128 time=5.01 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.134.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=128 time=0.905 ms
.....................................

Trying with nslookup:
nslookup
> www.google.com
;; connection timed out; no server could be reached
>

As already explained maybe a mistake with sme server configuration but NOT a problem related to my machine configuration because all other distroes works perfectly.

Do you have any suggestion?????

Hi folks,

I'm fighting a bit with VMware Server (build 23869) on a Centos 4.3 host and a SME 7rc2 guest.  I'm trying to get the VMware-Tools package installed/configured.

The rpm installs in the guest OK, but vmware-config-tools.pl hangs when it tries to unload the pcnet32 kernel module and I can't seem to get past it.

The VMware-Tools is necessary for a production environment.

Does the rc2 VM listed above have VMware-Tools installed?

Also, I am very interested in any performance tweaks folks have made to their SME VMs.  I'd like to turn off some of the SME services I don't need in this application...

Thanks,

G

Otay, an update...

I figured out how to get VMware-Tools installed.

I rem'd out the pcnet32 modute in /etc/modprobe.conf, rebooted the VM, then re-ran the vmware-config-tools.pl script and followed the instructions to implement the vmxnet driver.

A bit late, but if you read the vmware virtual machine manual it will tell you that the dhcp supplied with vmware does NOT pass on dns info (it acts as a DNS itself).

Unfortunately smeserver relies on acting as it's own DNS and getting the relevant upstream info (which it doesn't get from the vmware dhcp).

When configuring the server the almost last step asks if you want to define a nameserver (and then recommends that you don't). In this case put in the nat'd gateway address. This will likely be <your vmware net>.2 (eg. 192.168.10.2).

Good Luck!

Maybe for you but not for me   Since I don't know how to make the VM

1. I have to locate how to.
2. load required software
3. Build VM then probably re-do it a couple of times . . . just because I will screw it up somewhere along the way.

 -- vs --

1. download VM
2. run VM

I should figure out how to build the VM, but don't have the time to look at it right now, or maybe I am just lazy  :P

A BIG Thanks to Hanscees and everyone else that contribute so much to the SME community!

Peace,
Kevin
