[Announce] vmware sme7.0 b9 online
« on: January 06, 2006, 06:34:50 PM »
Hi,

A vmware virtual machine with smeb9 is on the mirrors, for instance here:

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/hanscees/

Please see if you can test if it works for you and let me know things that are unclear.
You should be able to run it with the free vmware player.

If this proves to be usefull it could be done more elaborately with all kinds of vmware clones.

greetings

I have posted some howto's in the new development section I am building:
http://smeserver.sourceforge.net/sme70/sme70/Manual/DeveloperHowtos?v=1he

The howto's show howto install development tools in the VMware machine and howto build rpm's from source with it.

If you try it let me know please.

Thanks, Hans-Cees! looks good.

SME7 beta 9 installs fine.

I was able to get VMWare from the download page:
http://www.vmware.com/download/player/
28.2 MB on-disk, not too bad (the download is a bit bigger)
The MD5sum checked out

I got your vmwareshowsme9b.zip with ftp from the mirrors
..  /smeserver/contribs/hanscees/
382 MB on-disk (FTP is much faster)
Note that the readme file is also in the zipped files.

Installed the player by dbl-clicking and walking through the dialogs
I chose to turn auto-run and the google toolbar off.

Extracted the vmwareshowsme9b.zip to a newly-created folder

launched the player, and navigated to the new folder in the dialog that popped up.
SME7b9 opened in just a few seconds! - very nice

Supposedly, the vmware virtual machine can be updated over the network. By YUM, for example. Need to test this.

%%%  Some suggestions:  %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
rename your zip file to something like VMWP-SME7-b9-6JAN2006-00.zip or something. These files are huge (not nearly as bad as Qemu's but still), and it will save trouble if we can tell at a glance which file is exactly what SME vm, when we need to delete some. Adopting a standard naming convention will be a big help.

Add a VMWP-b9-6JAN2006-00.md5 file, for download. I got
504d36b828b26daaef19cec83d50b697 *vmwareshowsme9b.zip for the downloaded file.

Are you in compliance with the EULA?
http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/player_distribution.html
If so, it looks like you could also include a copy of the player in your folder, which would download faster via FTP or rsync. If not, or you're not certain, let's contact VMWare and make sure we're in compliance.

%%%  Network connectivity:  %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Have to think about the best way to configure things so that SME Server or pkgs can be tested. As is, the SME7b9vm is in server-gateway, with it's external NIC with an IP address on my home network, but VMWare is in the middle, and the SME7b9vm is only connected to my host machine. I've got ZoneAlarm on the host as well, some folks may have XP's firewall. Then, my client is on a network behind a 'real' SME Server.

There is a net-config app bundled with the player (vmnetcfg.exe) - we may be able to get full connectivity that way. Just have to figure out how.

There is also a registry hack to allow one or the other (or both) of the VMware Network Adapters to be bridged with the actual NIC on the host machine.
http://www.vmware.com/support/kb/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1212

They say they shut it off to keep DHCP traffic from 'leaking' on to the physical network, but SME has it's own DHCP Server, we should be able to shut this off in VMWare, and just use the client, or a static IP (phys net). This is the way I've been running SME under QEMU, and it works fine. I'd rather do everything within VMWare (just because), though.

Anyway, thanks! It looks very promising to me. I hope with this tool, more people will help test updates to SME Server v 6.0 - we're very short-handed.

You are welcome. I have been using vmware for ages to test sme's.
But now the player is free it can be used for free mainly.

The file is now renamed and the md5 is added.
Please check if it is ok.

I do not see a problem. Here you can find how to adjust settings:

I do not understand this. I have shut down dhcp in the vmware client.
Is there another issue?

Great! Nobody's looking to charge for anything, we aren't trying to track anybody's activities or contact info, and we've no intention of misrepresenting the source of any software, so we shouldn't have an issue. Still, it'd be good to know they're ok with it.

For the network stuff, I'm still getting errors with yum and wget. Can see and ping the local network ok, just not getting out. Will look some more tomorrow.

This vm is of course for SME7 - I'm hoping, once we get to the easy how-to stage, to get one made for SME6. We need more help testing updates for that.

In server-only mode I have the network working fine.

I also would really like to see these VMs for 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.5RC1

I have used YUM on the SME 7.0 beta 9 and it works OK

I was suprised at how fast it all worked

It helped with working on both 6.x and 7.0 bugs today

Either 6.0 or 6.0.1 as these are the 'supported' versions. I would have a slight preference for 6.0.

6.5 is a nice to have as it is popular and I don't have any test machine for it. However its priority is below 6.0x

Thanks very much, Hans-Cees, much appreciated!

I got SME7b9 to work over the network today. The trick? Ignore vmware and just configure SME Server as if it were a real box on your network ;-) Sheesh!

I left it at server-gateway, static IP external (my real network) and internal. Gave the internal NIC an IP on a different subnet. Works great,

I'll try to check out the other two SMEs soon

Thanks again!

SME Server on VMWare
« Reply #10 on: January 09, 2006, 04:41:58 PM »
Hello Everyone,

A newbie to the Forum, but not to UNIX / Linux or Networks as such ;-)

I've been using SME Server 6.0.1 in about 5 Installations for the past half a year - all running in VMWare (GSX Server 3.1x). Absolutely stable.

SME is a great "Distro" for it's stated purpose. Good Work guys!.

If any one wants, I can provide "neutral" VM Installations, suitable for VMWare Workstation 4x, 5x, GSX Server 3.x, ESX Server and the new VMWare Player.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy - sorry, I don't know what a 'neutral' VM installation is...

If you mean playable virtual machines (like Hans-Cees made), i'm sure that would be great - less work for one guy to do. It's not as high a priority, but we could use a SME 6.0.1-01 vm, for testing patches/upgrades, and no doubt there'll be more versions of SME 7 to test as well.

hi,
I have added a vmware for 6.0, 6.01, 6.5rc1 and 7pre1 (last one is uploading now, will take three hours or so).

I am talking to vmware to include the player, but I think that will fail. They want someone to sogn for the distribution, and we do not have someone who can do that. But that isa not such a big deal since you can download the player from vmware.

I would recommend buying the vmware workstation though, for ease of use. But it is expensive.

Had somebody already installed SME 7.0 pre3 on a ESX 2.5.2 box?
ESX doesn't recognize the vmxbuslogic or vmxlsilogic driver, so i doesn't see a harddisk. Any suggestions?

I want to try SME 7.0

I found this on the VmWare site:
http://www.vmware.com/support/guestnotes/doc/guestos_redhatel40.html
There CentOS is based on RedHat Enterprise 4?
I followed the instructions on the website, but there seems a bug in de driver disk. See here: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=2066&forum=29&post_id=8406#forumpost8406

Somebody found a solution, but I don't know how to do this for SME:
