1) How can I backup the email & restore to another working system?
2) Can the user backup & restore his own mail?

Those are Maildirs so you should just be able to tar-up the folders and copy them to the new server.

Careful about the file ownerships though. Depending on how you set up the new server you might wish to run "chown -R
user
:
user
" on the copied Maildirs.

Wouldn't the maildirs be packed up as a part of the normal backup/restore process?
