Before I start to spend time on porting the Spamfilter and Antivirus panels it would be nice to know whether this is already planned by Mitel or the SME7 team.

Also, I might be blind but I cannot see anywhere what the purpose of SME7 is? Does Mitel plan to bring e-smith.org unsupported developers release back online???

Love the CentOS approach as I am using this in all my servers at work.

All in all great if I get access to the final release :-)

Gordon Rowell, Shad Lords and I have already done a significant amount of work in integrating virus scanning and spam filtering. I'd suggest you have a look at the change summaries "wellsi"'s put together, and do a test install of one of the alphas. It'd also be a good idea to join the developers mailing list at sourceforge.

Charlie, maybe a little guidance as to what sort of enhancement of the spam/antivirus features you'd like to see would be good.  Have you seen Jespers SPAM/Antivirus Panels for SME6.x?
http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_22.htm
http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_29.htm

They allow much more customization of options (RBL lists, spam filter level control, etc) via the server-manager than what is in 7.0a7 (have not got to 8 or 9 yet).  I would have thought you would have asked if he would like to contribute to SME7 already.  I for one would love to see all the options in Jespers panels included in SME7.

Hi there,

I’ve started testing this version in VM-Ware as I don’t have a spare server.

Installing and running Alpha_3 is ok, but the new Alpha_9 is strange – It ask for language like the old RedHat 7.x and after that it asks if I want to install Personal Desktop – Workstation – Server or Custom.

Obviously I use Server, then disk-druid appears?

Running autopartition and ok, then it asks for IP on nic…

Ending up with error see http://www.hegnstoften.net/sme7_alpha_9_error.gif

Any suggestions!

I'm happy to discuss such issues on the developers mailing list. IMO, web bb's suck for discussion.

Everyone is welcome to contribute - I don't have time to ask everyone individually. We have mailing lists to discuss things like this.

Fair enough, lets discuss it on the sourceforge mailing list then.  Hope to see you there Jesper.

There are screenshots of his two server-manager panels on the links in my previous post.

I would hope we can find a way to include folks like Jesper in this process. I know its not fair to speak for the community, but Jesper's SA and Clam contribs are one of the best features of SME that I rely on. It's simple, easy to use, and does what it says on the tin so to speak.

I'm not putting down anyone's efforts here, but I value Jespers work and hope some effort can be made to include him in ramping his work up to 7.

I would have thouth that Charlie's answer was sufficient - "Everyone is welcome to contribute".  A little discussion of any potential contributions (on the sf mailing list) would be appropriate perhaps before submitting rpms, but I'm sure enhancing the SPAM/Antivirus settings in the server manager would be a welcome addition to the SME7 distribution.

Agreed. It just seemed that if someone like Jesper wasn't aware that help was welcome, then maybe other contrib authors might be in the same boat?

I'm just a big fan of not re-inventing the wheel, but I'll temper that comment by saying I haven't seen v7 yet and I'm very appreciative of the hard work Charlie and Shad are putting into the release. ;)

You better all download and install 7.0alpha9 as it does contain significant changes & enhancements to email including qpsmtp & virus scanning (with basic on/off selection), spam filtering (with sensitivity, tagging, junkmail filtering & rejection level settings) and executable content message rejection (virus infected message rejection) all in a nice server manger panel.

Not the identical feature set of Jespers/Damians av panel but a worthwhile start, maybe it could be enhanced, probably the ability to remove quarantined & problem messages would be good.

I have installed 7.0alpha9 on an old box, a PII 233MHz with 90MB RAM & 3.2Gb HDD, which is sufficient for testing, if not a speed demon.

Look out for a bug that stops it rebooting the first time (until you apply the bug fix listed at sourceforge)
