Setting up E-Smith Gateway 4.0
« on: January 02, 2000, 02:16:16 AM »
I have installed v. 4.0 and 3.1 in succession and have been  unable to get anything to work. The install goes fine, the auto-detect on the ethernet cards is fine, the configuration seems to be correct as far as settings I can enter, but after reboot, I can not ping the E-Smith machine nor access the web-based utility. I am unable to log in with admin/default to the console (flashes a message very quickly, but not invalid login) so I can't try to ping my ISP's gateway ip, etc.  Any Ideas ?

Forgot to address a few things, the ethernet cards are Kingston (tulip) and 3Com 3c5900 (3x59x) and they both work fine under another system called Share The Net, but I'm looking for more control and a little more robust system that runs off the hard drive instead of floppy.  The ISP I use is @Home and I've heard they require the hostname cx-######-# when accessing their system even if you specify your ip address and not use their dhcp server.  I don't know how to change the hostname e-smith (default) to my hostname.

Just a few items to see if someone can help figure this out.

I have @home and dont use dhcp or their cheesy hostname.  I'm running 3.0 with the updates.  Try going to a bash shell.  Alt-F3 from the console and try logging in as root.  See if you can ping your @home gateway or dns.  Then also try pinging an internal ip. (192.168.x.x).  If all this works then the bare essentials are there.

There is no 4.0, only an unfinished development snapshot. If you are interested in the 4.0 development, please joun the devinfo mailing list.

Try logging in as root with the same password.

In v 3.1 the hostname is set/changed via the web interface. You
should be able to access the web interface even if your ethernet
interfaces aren't configured correctly using:

lynx http://localhost/e-smith-manager/

As to your local network problem, log in as root, check "ifconfig -a" to see that the network cards are allocated eth0/eth1 as you expect, and that the IP addresses are correct. Use ping to check connectivity with other machines on the LAN.
Keep an eye on /var/log/messages.

Everything (except the Identd problem in my other post) has been solved.  I do have one problem, every few hours my client machines have to be rebooted to access the internet again, I havent detemined a pattern yet but will post more when I know.

It seems to me that your client machines have a problem :-)

Let's end this thread here - any discussions of the 4.0 preview
should be moved to the developer mailing list.

My client machines do not have a problem, the problem is on the server, more specifically with rlinetd, the replacement for inetd. When rlinetd is stopped then identd is able to run, then you can start rlinetd (which is then unable to  start the auth section of the config file), Anyway I give up this time, 4 days and not even the gurus on the linux channels can figure this one out. And as for not posting messages about ver 4.0, why was it available not only on the main site but on the mirror sites, I went straight to the newest file (iso) downloaded it and installed it. Nowhere did it say it was a development release until you said so. I will find a solution elsewhere in the near future.

Thanks to anyone who attempted to help me.

We would be very interested to know of problems with rlinetd.
What made you suspect rlinetd as the cause of the problem? You said that your problem was that client machines had "to be rebooted to access the internet again". How would any problem
with rlinetd be fixed by rebooting client machines? Was all
internet access affected, or just the irc which required identd
auth? What happened if you just restarted rlinetd?

Well, the mirror sites are just mirror sites... :-)

No it didn't, but it does now. Thanks for bringing this to our attentino. Sorry if this caused a problem for you. Although there were various files on the ftp site, you didn't see an announcement anywhere, did you? :-)

Cheers
