[howto] join an win2k / 2k3 domain
« on: September 28, 2004, 12:19:43 PM »
I'm looking for an howto on joining an win2k/2k3 domain with an sme server.

I've found:
http://linuxgazette.net/105/price.html

But when i tried to follow it:

# SME Server software. Instead, modify the source template in
# an /etc/e-smith/templates-custom directory. For more
# information, see http://www.e-smith.org/custom/

Is there an SME howto? or is someone kind enough te help me out?

thx :)

The forum posts listed by Briank aren't entirely correct.  You can join an SME server to a Win2k domain, it just can't do active directory stuff.

Here's a how to the I wrote that walks you through the procedure:

Thanks for your help, but it doesn't work, i followed it to the letter :) i managed to join the domain, but no user auth or anything.
Release supported: e-smith 4.x, SME 5.x
could it be 6.x is very different?

Yes, this procedure will work with 6.x.  I just haven't updated that line of the howto.

OK, so you joined the SME machine to your domain.  Can you see the SME machine in network neighborhood?

When you say you have no user auth, what exactly do you mean? Since your win2x box is the PDC, it's the one doing user auth.  If you are having problems with that, then you need to look at that machine.  Remember SME won't "share" it's user accounts with the Win2k PDC.  Please give me an example of what you are unable to do?

I want to be able, to create "information bay's" and share it on the network with domain auth.

I suspect you'll have to start with SME 6.5 - as this comes with Samba 3 - which will integrate with Win2k.

I don't think the Samba 2.x which comes with 6.0 will do the trick.
