move
/home/e-smith/files/ibays
and
/home/e-smith/files/users
to /tmp

Then do a backup to desktop (not backup2ws) and verify the file after the backup is finished.

Then move your ibays and users back to the original locations (if necessary).
Use the backup file to restore to the new hdd (after you have installed a clean OS).

Hi!
I need to move my users and files from a sme 6.0 box
to an older sme box (sme 5.6+updates).

I wonder if your method would work.

The reason why  I want to do the downgrade is another story. It seems that there is a problem with the delivery of emails to outside. Some emails get missing and the logs don't give me any information. I have more than 5 boxes running sme 5.6 without problems and it is my first sme 6.01 and find this problem, that is why I prefer to do a downgrade to the version I trust most.

v6.x should do everything that v5.6 does and better.
Just guessing but your mail problem may be related to this, from v6.0 releae notes.

A transparent SMTP proxy has been added, to force all outgoing SMTP connections to go through the SME server. This feature enhances security with respect to viruses and worms that use SMTP to propagate themselves.

If you wish to disable this proxy, you can do so via:

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpfront-qmail Proxy disabled
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event remoteaccess-update
...
