Ray,

As per your HOWTO does this only work in Server ONLY mode and NOT Server & Gateway.

TIA

I use it on a server that is configured for Server & Gateway mode and it works fine.

I HAVE NOT tried it in Server only mode, but if the email server service is enabled & functioning (smtpfront-qmail) and the box has Internet access via another sme server or firewall, then I assume it should work OK.

Why don't you try it out and report back to me, that's the way HOWTO's get created.

I'm was wondering how this might work with ASSP? Any issues between the two?

I don't know, I don't use ASSP.
This RBL list blcoking is part of the email system so I don't think it matters what software you run. Incoming spam is blocked before it even gets into the server.

Why don't you try it out and let us all know, your information can then be added to the HOWTO

I think this should do it.
Would you please confirm with me that it works OK ?

/sbin/e-smith/config delprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

Thanks

Hi Ray,

Excellent effort here. I have a question though. You issue the following command:

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

which expects some kind of template in the /etc/e-smith/templates-custom/var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

directory. What is there on your server - nothing is on mine 6.0?

Rgds,
Jesper

I think you have made a wrong assumption. There are no custom templates created as this is a standard feature of sme v6.0 server, and the default location for the "master" template is
/etc/e-smith/templates/var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv
You will see the template fragments there.

Dear wacko & Jesper

Which version of 6, v6.0 (Mitel release)or 6.0.1-01 (contribs.org release) ?

> /sbin/e-smith/expand template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv
> ERROR: No templates were found for /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv.
 at /sbin/e-smith/expand-template line 64[/quote]

The basic instal is very simple, the rest of the howto is support information. Are you sure you did the following steps as a minimum ?

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

Do you see the template fragments mentioned in my earlier post ?

Please advise

Hi Ray

first of all great howto :0) .. very informative

Quote
Which version of 6, v6.0 (Mitel release)or 6.0.1-01 (contribs.org release) ?

Im running the Mitel Release
[root@sme root]# rpm -q SMEServer
SMEServer-6.0-04

Quote
The basic instal is very simple, the rest of the howto is support information. Are you sure you did the following steps as a minimum ?

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

The first step works fine, I installed multiple RBL lists, as shown below

[root@sme env]# /sbin/e-smith/db configuration getprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList

sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org:dsn.rfc-ignorant.org:postmaster.rfc-ignorant.org:abuse.rfc-ignorant.org:whois.rfc-ignorant.org:ipwhois.rfc-ignorant.org:bogusmx.rfc-ignorant.org:dnsbl.njabl.org:relays.ordb.org:dnsbl.sorbs.net:contacts.abuse.net:list.dsbl.org

the second step doesn't work and that error I posted earlier shows up, The third step works fine but obviously since te template isn't expanded this doesn't seem to action the RBL since nothing shows up in the logs either for the blocking

and yes the fragments DATABYTES  TCPLOCALHOST are visible but in the directory

/etc/e-smith/templates/var/service/smtpfront-qmail/env

not runenv, env is the only directory in the smtpfront-qmail directory.

Thnks for your help in advance

Wacko

Well there's the problem.

I have a standard v6.0 Mitel release without any updates and in
/etc/e-smith/templates/var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv
I see three fragments
00preamble
01Instances
10RBLLookup

If you don't have those then its not going to work.

As to why your server doesn't have them I do not know.
These are standard on the Mitel release and are NOT added in by any contrib.

Are you sure you server is standard, have you updated it at all ?

Is it the Mitel GPL release, you will see that brand name in server manager if it is, otherwise you will see the contribs.org logo.

I see your post here
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=21750.msg85986#msg85986
so you seem to be chasing the latest version updates

When I run

rpm -q SMEServer

I get
SMEserver-6.0-04

Can someone who is running any of the contribs.org releases/updates check and see if they have the abovementioned template fragments ?

Thanks

I have uploaded the template fragments in case you want them, get them here.

They go in
/etc/e-smith/templates/var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

Hi, Ray
I have a relatively fresh install of 6.0.1-01 and I can confirm that the template fragments are where they are supposed to be.
The rpm -q question also reveals my version to be 6.0-04
I have setup as per your howto (yesterday morning), and chosen a relatively conservative approach enabling only spamhaus for my RBLList.
The grep rblsmtpd query, though, stays conspicuously empty, and I still get some spam (though I have noted a definite decrease over the last week or so).
Normal behaviour, I hope, with my setup ?

Dear wyron

OK, the template fragments are definitely "in" newer versions of the OS, so wacko & jesper must have a different problem.

You will find that all the lists in the conservative listing are OK to use, in my opinion.

You can use server manager View Logs to view the smtpfront-qmail/current log file and review all entries, looking for ones with rblsmtpd in them.

Perhaps your system has not detected any spam type messages as yet. Keep watching. If you include some (or all) of the other lists you will have a higher hit rate.

That's not good. The 6.0.1-01 should come with a version of 6.0.1, don't you think?

I believe this _is_ correct as if you do rpm -qi SMESever you will see that it is release 4, of the 6.0 range from beta upwords? thats my only thinking of why it shows 6.0-04

As I understand it v6.0.1 from contribs.org, is essentally the same as v6.0 (6.0-04) from Mitel, except for mostly cosmetic (branding) changes and some minor updates.

I can't explain why some users don't see those template fragments, unless they are looking in the wrong place.

« Reply #25 on: April 18, 2004, 03:49:45 AM »
Gone through and added the sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org rbl and then the rebuild/restart etc.

If I tail -f the log files I can see the checks to spamhaus but no problem entries. In the last 8 hours there were 223 queries made to spamhaus but no errors (only 2 were valid emails). I manually tested the last one and spamhaus responded that it was listed in cbl.spamhaus.org. There is no mention of anything in the log files.

Looks like it isn't working. Any ideas?

When you say "seeing", do you mean "seeing 2000 entries in the log" or do you mean your user accounts have received 2000 spam messages.
The log entries are the rejections, and you should not receive those particular messages as they are rejected by the server. The reasons are generally shown, see my logs.

If you have only enabled the spamhaus rbl then you will only see spamhaus entries, try enabling some more lists. I have all the lists in the howto enabled.

I can't say if this works on the v6 beta, but it does work on v6.0 Mitel final and 6.0.1 contribs.org versions.

It's an e-smith-mailfront issue
« Reply #29 on: April 20, 2004, 01:27:11 AM »
For those without the runenv templates, run
rpm -qi e-smith-mailfront

On an upgraded 5.6 to 6.0 it's got
Name        : e-smith-mailfront
Version     : 1.2.0
Release     : 01
Build Date: Fri 27 Jun 2003 04:12:22 AM WST
Install date: Mon 06 Oct 2003 01:23:36 PM WST
Build Host: sardine.nssg.mitel.com

whereas a fresh 6.0 (+sp4) produces

Name        : e-smith-mailfront
Version     : 1.3.0                             Release     : 11
Build Date: Thu 11 Sep 2003 06:06:30 AM WST
Install date: Sat 10 Jan 2004 07:51:05 AM WST
Build Host: sme60build.nssg.mitel.com

It looks as though upgrades didn't touch e-smith-mailfront, but that's just odd...
Also, just having the templates does nothing. The run command for 1.3.0 specifically runs runenv if it's available. 1.2.0 doesn't even know about it.

AFAIK Gordon Rowell is up to e-smith-mailfront 1.5.0 (and the matched mailfront 0.91-3es), but I can't find where I got them from :(

As the HOWTO clearly says, this is for sme v6.x servers only.
The rpms that are on the v6.0 (Mitel) instal disk are
e-smith-mailfront-1.3.0-11.noarch.rpm
mailfront-0.81-1.i386.rpm

The rpms that are on the v6.0.1 (contribs.org) instal disk are the same
e-smith-mailfront-1.3.0-11.noarch.rpm
mailfront-0.81-1.i386.rpm

> It looks as though upgrades didn't touch e-smith-mailfront,

It would seem that some servers did not run the upgrade from 5.6 to 6.x correctly ???
You should be able to upgrade those rpms from the CD if you need to.

These are available from here (and mirror sites)
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/contrib/GordonRowell/RPMS/

but they are only required if you wish to implement the Pattern matching feature to block executable content (& viruses).
See devinfo  for further info, and my soon to be released HOWTO

Are you sure it's v6.0 final and not v6.0beta3 ??

If I look on my sme v6.0beta3 CD I see
e-smith-mailfront-1.2.0-01.noarch.rpm
mailfront-0.81-1.i386.rpm

and just for the heck of it...
If I look on my sme v6.0beta2 CD I see
e-smith-mailfront-1.1.0-10.noarch.rpm
mailfront-0.81-1.i386.rpm

All users should ensure they have upgraded to sme server v6.0 final (Mitel release) or sme server v6.0.1 (contribs.org release).

If you are still running a beta release you MUST upgrade.
You are silly to still be running a beta release anyway !!

Ray,

According to Mitel - several packages in the beta release were 'back ported' to the versions in use on their commercial release when 6.0 final was issued.

So, you are right - there are some packages in 6.0 final and 6.0.1-01 that have lower version numbers than the same packages in the beta release.

I don't follow your reasoning.
The last 2 posts I made clearly show that v6.0 & v6.0.1 have more recent versions that the v6beta releases.
ie 1.3.0 is greater than 1.2.0 therefore newer.

It appears that the older e-smith-mailfront package in the v6beta releases will not provide the RBLList functionality, although I have not verified this myself

Spam blocking with smtpfront-qmail HOWTO released

Sheesh!

I posted the information as a help. The other server was beta, then an upgrade to full, then to u4. I'm chasing up what I did, and if it is actually a bug.

Hopefully people can see exactly the requirements for RBL. Just saying "SME 6.x" may not help all those interested.

Thanks all the same.

Spam blocking with smtpfront-qmail HOWTO released

Dear All
Another good feature to implemenet is in my companion
Virus and file blocking HOWTO using smtpfront-qmail for sme server 6.0, 6.0.1 (not v6beta or earlier releases) which is available here
< http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rmitchell/smeserver/howto/Virus%20and%20file%20blocking%20HOWTO%20using%20smtpfront-qmail%20for%20sme%20server.htm >

Your server will reject email messages with virus infected attachments. You can also use it to control the type of attachments you wish to allow your users to send & receive ie reject multimedia files if required.

My server has processed NO virus infected messages in over 3 weeks as they have ALL (over 1000 since implementation) been rejected. The last (1) virus detected by Clamavis-ng was about 5 weeks ago, it was a new html exploit that pattern matching virus blocking does not detect.

Say goodbye to viruses in email attachments.

I don't think this is going to work any longer.  As I understand it, the SMEServer-x rpm was issued by Mitel as a method of keeping track of updates and such.  Unless 'contribs' begins to issue updates and use the same method.

A better way to see what your version is might be:
Code: [Select]

more /etc/e-smith-release

OR
Code: [Select]

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration getprop sysconfig ReleaseVersion

rbl in smtpfront-qmail
« Reply #38 on: June 23, 2004, 08:49:36 AM »
I have sme 6.0.1-01 installed and securemail from pagefault.org, which replaces mailfront to version 0.91-3es and e-smith-mailfront - to 1.5.0-13.
All of it works well without filtering spam by rbl bases, but when i install filtering spam by RBLList according Ray Mitchel solution, this not work.
Smtpfront-qmail works fine, not rblsmtpd. /var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current did't content rblsmtpd ....
By hands i started this construction, but :
@4000000040d8908a2fcd30b4 rblsmtpd: fatal: unable to run bl.spamcop.net: file does not exist
@4000000040d890a70c3aed94 rblsmtpd: fatal: unable to run bl.spamcop.net: file does not exist
@4000000040d891b224f61ebc rblsmtpd: fatal: unable to run cbl.abuseat.org: file does not exist

Who can tell me about what's wrong ?

That db entry looks OK. I see you have pattern matching installed but disabled.

What do you get from
rpm -q mailfront
rpm -q e-smith-mailfront
I get
rpm -q mailfront
mailfront-0.91-3es
rpm -q e-smith-mailfront
e-smith-mailfront-1.5.0-13

If you really do have those rpms installed then they are OK.

Try this for a test
Disable RBL blocking completely
/sbin/e-smith/config delprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList
/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv
svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

Then enable RBL blocking again with just one list, but try the spamhaus list shown as I know it is OK
/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv
svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

Report back, hopefully you see rejection entries in the log
to see them in readable date order do
grep rblsmtpd /var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current | tai64nlocal

> maybe use this:
> in /etc/tcprules/tcp.smtp
> 192.168.1.:allow,RELAYCLIENT="",RBLSMTPD="/usr/local/bin/rblsmtpd -r cbl.abuseat.org"

Not sure why you are quoting that example, that type of entry is related to the Pattern matching virus blocking, NOT to RBLList blocking. I think you are getting the 2 HOWTOs & methods confused.
You better read my 2 HOWTOs again.

All that looks OK, you are now configured for the one combined spamhaus list

> grep rblsmtpd /var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current |  tai64nlocal has no output

You will have to wait until you receive a message that gets rejected (because the sender was listed at spamhaus) before you will see any rblsmtpd type entries

To see all entries in date order you can also do
grep "" /var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current | tai64nlocal

PS Have you read my HOWTOs, everything I am saying to you here is in the HOWTOs ?

/var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current
shows all incoming and outgoing email messages including rbl rejections.

Have you made any mods to your system that would affect email, what other contribs or rpms do you have installed ? Is your box a standard v6.01 contribs.org release ?

Perhaps you just have to wait longer until a message gets rejected so it will appear in the log file.

To see the RBL rejections try this:
 grep rblsmtpd /var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current | tai64nlocal

To see atotal of numbers blocked by RBL's use this command:
 grep -c rblsmtpd /var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current | tai64nlocal

I have no changes from original contribs.org release, only installed amavis-ng from sme.swerts-knudsen.dk and assp on 25 port (smtpfront listening 125 port)
But, tested this connecting on 125 port (from local network). Port 125 closed from outside.

sorry, forgot authorize.

kernel 2.4.20-18 changed to 2.4.26 with strings for iptables(gcc used with -march=athlon).

to view all cludges of ..current may use MC and F3 and END, did't?

i try it for ssl-smtpfront-qmail:
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration show ssl-smtpfront-qmail
output: ssl-smtpfront-qmail=service
    ExternalInterfaceFilter=/usr/bin/qmail-queue.amavis
    Instances=40
    InternalInterfaceFilter=/usr/bin/qmail-queue.amavis
    MaxMessageSize=10000000
    Proxy=enabled
    RBLList=dnsbl.njabl.org:relays.ordb.org
    access=public
    authentication=enabled
    status=enabled

in this case mail sends in/outside localnet connecting on port 465 with TLS without proxiing by assp. i have't any rblsmtpd strings in /var/log/ssl-smtpfront-qmail/current and any traffic to this rbl-bases. i.e. mail not checks on rbl-servers. :(

And ASSP is the reason why the RBL is never consulted - look at the IP that smtpfront-qmail recieves mail from - it's always going to be 127.0.0.1 & that's why the RBL can't work.

Doing controlled tests here, I think that ASSP is largely obsoleted by the RBL feature, so I would consider dumping ASSP and just use the RBL.

thanks NickR.

yes, assp redirecting passed mail from 25 port to 127.0.0.1:125 and rblsmtpd did't requests to rbl-bases, so /var/log/smtpfront-qmail/current has no entries of rblsmtpd with logs.

by default SME6 has no antivirus, antispam(spamassasin myabe usefull for stucks, which eating plenty of resources) modules.
only patterns for filtering, not managing by panel.
use contribs.org and pagefault.org, sme.swerts-knudsen.dk for download and install addintional software. You may install and use gcc, then compile all what you want.

It's running fine on a production box, the underlying concept did not change between the old and new versions, just the server manager email panel and the grouping of the standard patterns.

A nice additional feature was the ability to have one level of pseudonym of a pseudonym. Works OK too.

I will update the HOWTO when the contribs.org upload facility is working again.

Thank you Gordon

As it says in the HOWTO, where filtering occurs after the message has been accepted by the server, then that method should be compatible with RBL spam blocking.
So far the only spam software found to be incompatibele is ASSP, as it also uses RBL.

Mind you, if you implement RBL blocking you won't have a lot of spam to look at, there is very little need to use any additional spam filter such as spamassassin.

The files have been removed as that was only part of the problem.

The real "fix" is to update your 6beta3 sme to the final release, either Mitel 6.0 final or contribs.org 6.0.1 takeoff release. You MUST have either of these versions installed for the rbl functionality to work.

You can totally block mail from known addresses using the Mailrules contrib. It does appear to work on OK 6.0, but with some minor issues.

The mailrules rpm can clash with qconfirm contrib from G Rowell, and also some "styles" of filter settings don't get rejected (so I have been told).

The (v5.6) mailrules rpm works OK for me on a 6.0 server except for the clash mentioned above.

I read your other thread, you just say it doesn't work but you don't tell us what settings you used etc etc. You are also talking about mailfront rather than mailrules. Are you actually installing and using this rpm
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/contrib/Mailrules/SME5.6/dmc-mitel-mailrules-0.0.1-7.noarch.rpm

Have you tried
rpm -e dmc-mitel-mailrules
and then do a reinstall

You might also like to try
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event email-update

This does not work  :-(

Upgrading with latest iso does not change any files. And also my server manager shows  SME Server 6.0.1-01 - i last upgraded to the contribs.org version.

Is there a way of "forced upgrade"?

Otherwise i will have to do a clean install without restore and i hate that.

hi.

i have been attempting to follow the howto documentation for adding RBLList entries and i have not seen any new entries which should've been added.

my version: SME 6.0.1-1
the commands:

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration getprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org:whois.rfc-ignorant.org

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

all of this is as per the howto. so i am confused... do i have to use a signal-event config-save as well?

thanks.

What entries do you believe that you don't see, what are you expecting to see ?

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org:whois.rfc-ignorant.org
.................expand & restart etc etc

Check your spelling .....smtpfront-qmail.......

Clearly the cpmmand did not update the db.

In case you did not realise it, you did post a command that was spelt incorrectly, you used smtpront-qmail but it should be smtpfront-qmail

Try entering the db configuration again and check it with the getprop command.

All I can suggest is to try this, which is cut & pasted straight from the HOWTO.

Disable RBL blocking

/sbin/e-smith/config delprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

svc -t /service/smtpfront-qmail

Enable blocking for multiple lists

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop smtpfront-qmail RBLList sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org:whois.rfc-ignorant.org:dnsbl.njabl.org:relays.ordb.org

/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/runenv

Check the db entry

Hi Ray.

i deleted the existing single list using delprop, expanded the template and ran the svc -t bit. then, i ran the getprop to verify and it showed an empty list - as expected. next, i ran the setprop, expand template and svc -t. finally, i ran the getprop which now shows the 2 lists i wanted to try...

sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org:whois.rfc-ignorant.org

so i guess, long story short, any single additions to the existing list aren't possible and you would have rid yourself of the current list(s) and re-apply the new group of lists...

thanks for all your help Ray!

cheers,
