I have upgraded to php-4.3.4 with webmail running on a SME6.0 server-gateway.
Upgrade php, php-mysql, php-ldap and php-imap with rpms from here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/e-smith/contrib/DanBrown/RPMS/i386/?M=D
and then do step 7-11 and 13 from this howto:
http://no.longer.valid/mylinks/singlelink.php?cid=109&lid=353
At least this seems to work ok for me…

Please be aware that PHP 4.3.4 has a problem with the "base_dir" and "include_path" and other settings (in /etc/php.ini and httpd.conf), which will make Webmail and other PHP appilcations in ibays unstable.
They sometime need a lot of refresh in the webbrowser if they will work at all.
