Need to keep a copy of all outgoing emails for archive
« on: March 10, 2004, 11:58:14 PM »
Hi,

For legal reasons, my company now needs to keep a copy of all outgoing messages in an archive.

The present system allows us to deliver and forward all INCOMING messages to an archive account.

However, I need to track and archive OUTGOING messages. Basically, I need a way to do the same "deliver and forward" for outgoing messages into another account.

I've searched the forums but still can't find something that addresses this. If this has been discussed and addressed, pls let me know the link. Otherwise, any idea you have would be appreciated.

Regards,
Jerry

Charlie Brady developed a contrib to do what you want. We use it and it works perfectly on 5.6. Have not tested on 6.0 but plan to soon. Below is how you set it up.

1) From your closest mirror, download the rpm.  Example:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/contrib/CharlieBrady/
RPMS/i386/mailfront-0.86-1es2.i386.rpm

2) Use the server-manager to add a user named 'maillog'

3) Add the rpm:
   # rpm -Uvh mailfront-0.86-1es2.i386.rpm

4) Add the environment variable:
   # echo maillog > /var/service/smtpfront-qmail/env/LOG_RECIPIENT

5) Send some e-mails and you should find messages delivered to intended
recipients plus archival copies in the 'maillog' inbox.

Good luck.

copy of sent/received e-mail

I´ll test this on weekend.

I´ll test it with SME-6.01-01 .

I just do not know how to get copy of incoming email. I´d like to do that without access each user email configuration. Using server configuration just like this to capture outgoing messages!

Tested with SME 6.01-1

Hi
I have finally tested it with SME 6.01-1... but got strange behaviour: just get one copy of messages (I was testing it in a internal server, with no way to get messages from external accounts!).

I thought I should get a copy of message when sent and another when received!

BTW: I have other problem: I´d like to use this with a way to restrict attachments. But the solution I found to block attach has his own mailfront (0.91...) and it appears to do not do copies! Any tip about this?

Thanks

You did not mention which method of file attachment blocking you are using. If it's Ray Mitchell then the following versions should work on SME 6.01

mailfront-0.91-6es
e-smith-email-4.15.0-07gr07
e-smith-mailfront-1.5.0-13gr06

Version of Attach Block
« Reply #6 on: November 08, 2004, 07:39:39 PM »
I´m sorry... but I don´t remember what version I´m using :D

I know it put this on e-mail page of SME:

You can block executable content in e-mail   attachments by highlighting the executable attachment types you wish to block. E-mail containing these attachment types will be automatically returned to the sender.

I have this versions installed:
  e-smith-email-4.15.0-07gr07.noarch.rpm
  perl-libnet-1.17-1.i386.rpm
  sortspam-1.1.0-05.i386.rpm
  e-smith-mailfront-1.5.0-13gr06.noarch.rpm
  perl-Net-Server-0.85-1.i386.rpm
  mailfront-0.91-3es.i386.rpm
  perl-perl-ldap-0.31-1.i386.rpm

You talked about a new version of mailfront (mailfront-0.91-6es). Will this new version had the option to create copies of messages just like 0.86 have?

And how I can have copies of incoming e-mail?
This method is just to outgoing, right?

Thanks!

From your description you might be using the rpm package "email-patternmatch" from Dungog. If memory serves me right the "mailfront-0.91-3es.i386.rpm" will break the ability to "create copies of messages".

What you can do is to try to install the rpm mailfront-0.91-6es.i386.rpm from Charlie which can be obtained from http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/e-smith/contrib/CharlieBrady/RPMS/i386/

If it doesn't go well you can always revert back to the other version.

I have used this sucessfully to both make copies of email and block attachment on a SME 6 but the blocking method i used is Ray's

Hi

Thanks by your tip.
I have installed mailfront 0.91 6es on server right now and I´m getting copies of received e-mail. Will try to see if copies of sent are done too ASAP (no webmail access now!)

Could you please point me to an URL of your attach filter solution? Thanks!

BUT I wish I could do copies of e-mails received on server side without have to configure on html control panel.
HAve I skip something?

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean when you say "do copies of e-mails received on server side without have to configure on html control panel"
Can you please elaborate ?

I wanna to have copies of incoming e-mail at same level as for outgoing. Without any configuration on web panel for each user.

just follow what BobK has outlined above and you should have both incomming and outgoing mails going into that mailbox.

you should not need to do configuration on web panel for every user.

if you need to do sorting or have a more complex requirement then you need to install something like "lazy admin toolkit", then you can utilize procmail.
