Server hangs on startup
« on: March 01, 2004, 09:34:50 AM »
My SME server didn't shut down properly, hanging while unloading squid.

As the machine starts up the file systems loads as readonly

It now hangs when it starts up loading:
settings hostname mail

If I ctrl-c it loads a few more things but then goes into a loop trying to load things and each gets an error message about the files being readonly.

I've tried running an upgrade CD to v6.0 but it finds 'dirty filesystem' and suggests rebooting to allow the filesystem to repair itself but it still hangs as above. I get no access to a command prompt.

Is there any way to break the startup so I can run a fsck / on the filesytem?

Thanks in advance
Scott

Try this :
when you see the lilo choice screen (with the Mitel logo), press the TAB key to enter the command line mode of lilo. Then you can type :
Quote
Mitel-SME-up single

to start in runlevel 1 (maintenance mode of linux : no network, no multiusers).
You'll have a root shell where you can fsck all but 'root' filesystems

I haven't done on SME but it works on a Redhat, so should work on SME.

Unfortunately nothing happens when I hit the TAB key when the Mitel Logo appears.

Any other ideas?

Hi,

Try booting from a floppy disk or if you don't have any try booting on the knoppix or some other live cd distrib to check your filesystem.

I've tried on my SME 6.0b3 (I've found a time slot to reboot ;-) :
The correct key is CTL-X

a) Hit Ctrl-X at the logo; get a boot: prompt
b) Hit TAB to list the kernels available to load
c) type the name of one of them (not the smp)EXACTLY as displayed followed by the word 'single' i.e. Mitel-SME-up single
d) Run fsck /
e) It will report the errors it finds and ask if you want them fixed; might pay to make a note of any that relate to data on the drive.
f) Once completed either type exit to continue (either boots the system to runlevel 7 or reboots if major changes made).
g) If still no good try upgrade routine again.
