Just a thought - I would love to see the following available in the core distro (as switchable options):-

1. Antispam;
2. SquidGuard;
3. Antivirus.

This would make SME a true "server in a box" solution for the non-techies out there trying to get away from M$ products.  All three things are available as contribs, but take a bit of tweaking/configuring to get working properly/together.

There's other stuff, of course, but these three items (IMHO) are the crucial apps...

Sorry, But i disagree with you, because, i don't use all this contribs.
So i don't want to have to configure them on my SME Box. :-(

I only use SME for :
- server and gateway
- non anonymous ftp
- web server

I don't use all the features available either.
It's just that antivirus/antispam are two things that I (and I suspect, many others) who want an SME server (in the generic sense of the word) would need.

A nice alternative might be to include contribs known to work with a particular release on the ISO CD.  It would cut down on lots of problems, as most people would then be running the same versions of everything - when an issue crops up, chances are, someone has seen it already...

Just my 2p's worth...

Oh ! ok.
Yes, it would be a good idea. But i suggest to add this contribs as third party, like other distro, on a second CD for example.

We should have a standard distro as an iso file
Then we should have additionnal modules (contribs that have been approved and tested)

I think contribs should be separated from the release process, for testing only.

If SME is going to attract new users something has to be doned with the "contribution" installations!

I beleive that the way Jesper Knudsen has taken with installation is the way to go. The script lower the expectations on the users and makes the installation smother.

Example from Jespers web page (http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_16.htm)
[root@e-smith]# cd /root
[root@e-smith]# wget http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/downloads/SpamAssassin/sa_install.sh
[root@e-smith]# sh sa_install.sh

I agree that there should be a library with "contribs that have been approved and tested" and also a version index as well.
There has been many questions/request about this.
