e-smith is already 90% there, especially with the recent additions of PHP, MYSQL, and MC - Midnight Commander.

To make it a 100% DREAM MACHINE:

1. Add HP Openmail
2. Add ARKEIA tape backup software shareware
3. Add a basic X server for X emulators on WINDOWS PC's, to run the Arkeia X GUI
4. Add a FAX send/receive facility.

I hereby place an order (PAID FOR) for the first version of e-smith that has all of the above.

This will definitely seriously affect Microsoft's Small Business Server.

ESmith also needs a statically linked X editor, which can be thrown across the network, so I dont have to resort to vi all the time.

If you don't like vi, then use pico. Or use a local X editor on your workstation.

Why not use the Arkei Java GUI?

Adding XWindows would (IMO) detract from all the things E-Smith has strived for.
ie simplicity, stability, small overheads, secure as possible.

The applet for Arkei does work ok, and to be quite honest, I haven't touch the backup routine after some initial tweaking...

The WINDOWS Java GUI does not display all the functions of the X GUI, limiting the use of the product. The buttons, some menus, etc are missing.

According to ARKEIA that is a Java limitation.
