RAID configuration problem

For the second time in about two months, my SME has alerted me that it is resynch'ing the RAID drives.  What would cause the drives to become out of synch?  Is this a warning sign for a potential problem?

I am using Darrel May's raid monitor on a SME 5.6 with software raid.

I know this doesn't solve your problem but I don't use software RAID if it's at all avoidable.  Software RAID uses the computer's processor to handle the write requests which can hamper performance, plus I couldn't get the software RAID capabilities in SME (redhat) functioning reliably.  I know many are able to do it without problems so it's likely a configuration or incompatibility problem.  I ultimately found a hardware RAID card that works perfectly with SME and have had no problems at all.

Incidently, the problems I was having are similar to yours.  I used software RAID 1 during installation and later reboots of the server showed errors while booting the RAID device.  The errors pointed to an out of sync problem.  I was still testing the installation so it didn't create any real problems or data loss.

From the logs your server went down (probably not cleanly) and restarted hence the raid resync.
I would suspect power problems. Is the server running on UPS.

I will get the server onto UPS next week.  

Most other SME's I setup with hardware raid now.  I use the ARCO ide raid controllers http://www.arcoide.com/products/raidcontrollers/raidcontrollers.html - they are easy to setup and software independant.


I choose not to use other ide raid controllers because of issues with software compatability.

This is a home setup so I didn't have lots of $$$ to throw at the system.  What I eventually did was pick up a Compaq Smart 2/P RAID card off ebay - it was real cheap and I figured if SME didn't support it, I have a Win2K server that would.  Works like a champ.  Then I found another ebay deal on a box of 4 full size 20GIG hard drives and set them up in a RAID5 array - 3 online and one spare.  It was a bit of a pain to set up but well worth the effort.

It's inaccessable right now, my external NIC died last night and the replacement isn't working (same brand and model).  I have to do some research on the message boards to figure out how to properly do a swap.

In case anyone is interested: Following this discussion I tested the Arco DupliDisk3 ide raid controller and it works like a champ. It's indeed OS independent, automatically restores a raid partition and does it reasonably fast (about 40 minutes for a 40G disk).

The manual sucks (refers to software that has since been replaced), but since you don't really need the software, that's not a big issue.

For home use the price is rather hefty (about 300 Euro), but I would certainly recomend it for a professional production environment.

Just my 2 cents (well, actually my 300 Euros :-)
