I have just decided to install Hylafax and tried to install an external modem. However I cant seem to communicate with either of the ports and after looking at the /var/log/dmesg I found that the ports are setup as the following.

ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

Im not to worried about what the ports are called BUT a am worried that i can not get any communications over the ports. I have checked the BIOS and the settings are correct.

I have never seen the pords setup as ttyS00 and ttyS01 normally they are ttyS0 and ttyS1. I have even tried communicating directly using minicom.

Anyone have any ideas.

Hi there

I have just started doing work with Hylafax, but not finished the modem config. Let me know if you sort out your problem and what happens!

Cheers and good luck!

First, what modem are you installing?

Second, are you using a DB9 to DB25 cable?

Third, are you using the right cable?

Take the same modem and cable and connect it to a Windows machine. If you can see the modem under Windows then the cable is OK. If not you need a different cable.

Hylafax takes 2 minutes to install. No more. Check www.chaloner.ca.

Also,

This:

ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

Should look like;

This:

ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS1 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

Thanks for the input,

I am going to have to try that when I get to the client. Hands are tied till then. I went to www.chaloner.ca and had a look at Chaloner Hale's work. Cool!! Will use that info for sure.
