Topic: 10/100 network adapter problem

Hi,

I changed my 10mb/s hub for a 10/100 hub and I can't see my server on the local network anymore. It was and it's still working fine with a 10mb/s hub.
It's not a problem from the hub cause the other workstations are working fine.
Do I have to modify something in the network configuration ?

Just having a guess - Now, I'll take the term 'hub' in a generic sense and assume that it could be a router/gateway also? The only thing my brain's come up with so far is to suggest: Was your 10mb/s 'hub' acting as a DHCP server (which your webserver was using)??

Obviously if that was the case and you removed the 'hub' your server would have something wacky going on with it's IP address. *shrug*

Hi,

Thanks for your answer but the 2 Hubs are simple "3com Office connect" with
no DHCP function. The only difference between the 2 hubs is the speed...
What is really strange is that the link is up between the hub and the Sme
server. This Sme server is acting as DHCP server for the whole network but
the workstations are not able to "see" it...
Is there a command from the shell to know the actual status of the eth0 ?
maybe there's something to configure on the network card (which is a 3com
10/100)

type in ipconfig - will give you the status of your card.
Maybe go into the sme consol and reconfigure your server and set that nic a static ip address.

on linux it is "ifconfig".
ipconfig runs on windows...

Just in case if your NIC on the SME - 3COM adapter, I have had too many problems with their autosensing 10/100MB link. 3com NIC is a big no-no for me now. Intel or Realtek based adapters much less demending and just work.

Just a thought - you didn't by any chance use a crossover cable on the 10mb hub to the uplink port did you and are now connecting it to a standard port ? In any case I would first try swapping cables - some old ones don't like 100mb

2 things:

The 10/100 3com hub that u buy has bridge capability between 10 and 100?,
some cheap 3com hubs are dual speed but they do not route between the
10 hub and the 100 hub connections, so machines that are running at 10
aren't seen by machines in 100 mbit, verify this with the hub manual.

and the other thing:
the patch wire between the server and the hub was wired properly?, remember
to follow the CAT 5 conventions, or the patch will not work at 100 mb, it will
indicate link at both sides but will not transfer ANY data.

I use the following that is known as the 568A or 568B, I use the A which
is looking the contacts with the wire coming from below, from left to right
White/green
Green
White/Orange
Blue
White/Blue
Orange
White/brown
Brown

if you made your patches like these with cat 5 cables it will work for sure.

if they aren't wired properly the impedance will not be correct and won't
transfer data at 100 mb.
