hot-swapping emsith hard disk help
« on: February 05, 2003, 02:46:12 PM »
A collegue of mine has asked me to look into a problem he's encountered with hot-swapping a disk whilst running e-smith. There are 2 disk drives in the system, the first contains the OS and the second contains data. It's the second disk that he is trying to hot-swap. When replacing a disk with another, disk - one without data on, he still sees directory listings for the old drive, despite it's absense. This continues until a reboot.

The harddisks are used in some sort of backup routine, hence the need to hot-swap them as if they were any form of removable media.

Any help/insight into this problem would be much appreciated,

Jon

I thought that if you wanted to remove a drive you had to unmount it then remove it, then if you put another in the you will have to remount the new drive, at least thats what I though you had to do, with IDE drives?

Hi Jon,

A little more information is requried. What exactly is the setup (hardware wise ?).

IDE drives not in a specialised Hotswap chassis do not support Hot-swapping in general. In the Windows environment, some manufacturers (like Lian Li) have in the past come up with mobile rack that work in conjunction with a special driver to allow something like this to work. The important note here is the driver, without which Hot swapping is NOT supported or allowed.
