/etc/smb.conf customizations for NT4 PDC?

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=4529.msg15729#msg15729 got me looking at /etc/smb.conf and I saw all the "NT-server-here" stuff. Will customizing the security level and password server cause it to use the NT server's login/password listing to determine access to the SME's shares? What exactly does the "domain controller" value affect?

We use the SME only for email and internet access, so I'd like to get it set up to use the NT server for stuff that the NT server is supposed to be handling, but I don't want to break anything.

Also, is there some problem with using the "unix password sync" option to keep the passwords in sync, and allow password changes from Windows clients?

Oh yeah, I'm running 5.0 Update6 if it matters.
