please help! mail problem , no clues
« on: May 15, 2002, 09:30:50 PM »
Hi!
I'm really desperate!
I can't receive any mail from outside world!
I can send mail, but can't receive.
I really don't know what could be wrong,

I received, last friday, my last mail form outside.

I have been searching everywhere for a clue and nothing seems to be wrong.
I have reinstalled everything I've made also a backup and a restore.
I can ping and see my web page, my pop server, my ibays, etc. from outside my network (from home for instance)

everything looks normal.... but I still do not receive any mail from outside.
any Ideas?
whould be very nice if someone could help me...
Ale.

What is your external IP address?  Can you telnet from the internet to port 25 on your server?  Has your ISP blocked port 25?

Terry:
many thanks for the answer....
Mi ip address is dynamic, but now is 200.81.30.31, I use dns2go service to point to my IP. my isp tells me all is ok and no port is blocked, the response for a telnet from  my isp to port 25 is : 220 smtp daemon ready
I will try from a modem connection to telnet or scan  my ports to see....
What do you think about this?
Ale.

Alejandro,

I tried to telnet to 25 on 200.81.30.31 and can not make a connection, I can ping that address. What is your dns2go name? Is that address still your current one?

Alejandro,

reboredo.net does resolve to 200.81.30.31, but I still can not get a connection on port 25.

I'm running an nmap portscan against you right now, I'll email you the results of it.

I have port scanned you and can see port 22 ssh
 port 80 apache server
 port 143 imap server
port 110 pop3 server but no port 25 and I cannot telnet into 25 but I can into port 110. It would seem that your port 25 is not open to the outside world

Alejandro,
I sent an email to your hotmail account with the nmap results. Short story, as Andy says above, port 25 is not open. Either your ISP is blocking it or your server or firewall does not have it open.

does anyone know how I can open close/ports in my server or where i can look for open and closed port directives in the server?
By the way I'm not able to access my server anymore from ssh since a few minutes ago.....

Many thanks to all of you trying to help me....
I really apreciate this..

Hi again.
I have just received from my isp representative , telling me they are blocking port 25 of all their dynamically addressed custommers, in order to avoid unauthorized relaying of mail in most of bad configures servers.
I told that my server has the capabilityof blocking relaying since it can be used just within private network (if configured so)
But he told me that the filter was in the complete pull of IP addresses, so they are offering me now a static IP address to solve this issue.... (I think it could be fine)
I posted this to let others know the cause of my problem and to thank again for all the help I received...
(ps I apologize for my awfull use of english...;-)

Thanks you all !!!
