My external WAN link to the outside world works great, but I get no signal for the internal LAN.  when I route it through the switch I don't even get acknowledgement , light, through that.  ANY help?  Could my LAN NIC not supprt this?

If I understand you correctly, you are not getting a light on the NIC you are having problems with.  That sounds like the NIC might be faulty becuase you should get a light before the OS ever even boots up.

Also,  more info is usually better than less when trying to get help.  Some of the stuff that may help figure out what the problem is:

What version of SME
What make/model NIC
Are you able to ping the internal IP of the SME box?
Can the any of the PC's on the internal network ping each other (might indicate a problem w/the switch.)
