"Timeout on read" in SME512 + Update1
« on: March 21, 2002, 05:27:05 PM »
Dear All,

I have setup a new SME512 server with Update1 applied and with Webmail enabled. Then I migrated a few virtualdomains from my old ESSG412 to this new server. Strangely, I observed many "time out error msg" in messages LOG:

Mar 21 03:42:32 mail smtpd[25833]: No reverse mapping for address 195.78.6.219 (1)
Mar 21 03:52:32 mail smtpd[25833]: Timeout on read (more than 600 seconds) - Abandoning session

The consequence of this is that, I believe, many inbound email are blocked.

The ESSG412 does not have this problem at all. I am not sure if it is due to a typo somewhere, or is this a "security" feature in 512 ? Appreciate feedbacks from you all.

Jon

Tks Jon for the bug report link. Although my SME512 server was setup as "server only", I had just tried the patch a while ago (couldn't access this website in the past 16 hours ...) but without success.

I also did more digging and found the following abnormal msg in messages LOG. While the smptd accepts some of the sessions and deposits the mails, about 60% were dropped. It looks like the xinetd expects some proper response from the initiating smtp site but does not get it. How can I rectify this identity server ERROR?

Mar 18 16:28:35 mail xinetd[1468]: Bad line received from identity server at xxx.xx.xx.xx: 63913, 25: ERROR: NO-USER
Mar 18 16:28:37 mail xinetd[1471]: Bad line received from identity server at xxx.xx.xx.xx: 63933, 25: ERROR: NO-USER
Mar 18 16:28:44 mail xinetd[1467]: read: Connection reset by peer
(errno = 104)
Mar 18 16:28:01 mail xinetd[1457]: Bad line received from identity server at 213.92.5.23: 63963, 25: ERROR: NO-USER

On doing a file-to-file comparision between the setup files in 412 and 512, I have pinned down the problem to be related to the defaults section in /etc/xinetd.conf (512). After I have removed the USERID/DURATION argument from both log_on_success and log_on_failure lines, restarted xinetd, the smtpd Timeout error disappears. But then I do not if there is any side-effects to the system ...
