Modem not responding

hello there,

I set all my dial up details when I installed e-smith but the modem doesn't seem to respond - netcomm roadster II 56k.

How can I trouble shoot this ? Is there anything I need to do to get it going - don't know where to start.

I checked out a few HOW TOs but they didn't help much.

cheers,

Adam

A simple test would be to check which com port the modem is on ...say com1 which is ttyS0. Create the /dev/modem symlink using #ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem then type in minicom at the prompt. Once you have minicom running type atdt phone_number and see if the modem is dialing. If that works login to the console as admin and make sure that the correct com port is specified in the dialing options. You could also fire up lynx and type in a URL and see if the modem dials out or not. If that works it means the server is ok and it might be on the client side that you need to look.
