mini HowTo for e-smith 5 and dungog's MultiPop contrib RPM

These are the steps I took to get it to work

Feel free to share and correct

Adam

---
1) Install e-smith contrib RPM Multipop. This adds a custom Panel to the webpage manager.
2) Edit /etc/services AND /etc/e-smith/templates/etc/services/template-begin

change the line

pop-3     110

to

pop3       110

(NB Fetchmail complains with a surreal error message here - it cannot find the port for POP3 if you do not do this correction)

3) Edit /etc/xident.conf and /etc/e-smith/templates/etc/xident.conf/body
(not 100% sure now where the template is - not at home machine at the moment)

Scroll down to find the pop-3 entry and also correct to pop3

4) As it stands there is one correction I found I had to do. Occasionally you will get a message to root about lock-control files. I traced this to

/etc/startmail - and /etc/e-smith/templates/etc/startmail/S20body

I changed the line

su qmailr -s /bin/bash -c /etc/fetchmail

to

/etc/fetchmail

Though I am sure better minds then me will give me a reason why that is bad. If you don't mind the run-control messages..skip this step - and perhaps set up your email client to automatically trash these messages

5) In the web based server config, go to email retrieval and set it to multidrop. Put here the first of your pop3 accounts. I used one with the same user name as a local user. I think this one may actually be a dummy accout - In my case I set this up to pick up work email at home as I am not to worried about it!

Someone should be able to confirm/deny this.

Also here set e-mail retreival times for email pickup

6) Now in the dungog.net setting is multipop. Set up all your other pop3 accounts, usernames, passwords and server names. Unfortunately all are listed on the webpage as clear text but as long as this is restricted it should not be a problem. I then printed out this page to keep safe as I have tonnes of pop3 accounts to configure and I hate remembering passwords!

7) Now go to the server console.

Start your internet connection

In one virtual console (CTRL-ALT-F2) log in as root and run

tail -f /var/log/maillog

and go to another console (CTRL-ALT-F3) - login again as root and

/etc/startmail

8) All being well the email should now be picking itself up. Swap back to CTRL-ALT-F2 and watch maillog as the attempts go in. Its useful to see if you've made any mistakes entering the account details.

It should also autodial in the times you've selected to dial..

Some of the workarounds above, along with resolutions for some other criticial mail issues, have been fixed in SMEServer-5.0_Update2, which Mitel strongly recommends all users of SME Server 5.0 apply immediately. For details, see

  http://www.e-smith.org/release/5.0/status/
