Topic: boot error: init id 2...6 respawning too fast

dear all,

we've been running e-smith 3.1 for over 1 year in server and gateway mode without any troubles. but the server refused its duty this afternoon. it was not reachable over the network. we tried to shut it down for a reboot, but didn't succeed. the computer reported an error:
INIT: id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
and the same message for id 3 to 6.
afterwards, we were unable to log in as root at a console.
finally i decided to press the power button but during booting the computer still stops with reporting the same error over again.

can anyone help me recovering the system?
