strange messages in /var/log/messages
« on: March 17, 2001, 06:24:38 PM »
hi all,

thought i'd pose this question here: i'm getting this:

Mar 18 00:55:16 morphaeus inetd[1013]: auth/tcp: bind: Address already in use

in my /var/log/messages quite a bit. yes, i know that it means something else is using bind's port, thus preventing it from doing so, but how do i go about resolving this problem? lsof isn't included in e-smith, and i'd prefer not install any "non-e-smith-vetted-software" if i can.

if it helps, i don't _think_ it showed up until i installed my new adsl link (using charlies rp-pppoe stuff...) ... previously i was using an isdn link, cisco router, providing a static (external) ip for e-smith. now it gets the external ip via dhcp.

yet another question: since all the info provided by dhcp (ip, dns) is static, would it be a good/ok/bad idea just to tell e-smith to not use dhcp? i'm pretty sure that it doesn't use any identifiers during ppp authentication.

zac.

What version are you using? We haven't used inetd since version 3.x. If you are using 4.0, then why is inetd running?

lsof is fine. But you don't need to debug, you need to upgrade.

Upgrade to 4.1.1, it has PPPoE as a standard feature.

that's interesting. i got e-smith from your download site, version 4.0, as an iso image. i'm currently running 4.0.1 with the dns patch.

ahhh. upgrade. that's scary ;)

okay, question for you. i've installed extra stuff, such as the masq-icq module, webmail, rp-pppoe, plus other stuff. if i upgrade, is this going to screw things up? would you recommend that i download an iso for 4.1.1 instead?

also, ever since i got me the adsl, i've been getting a _really_ strange thing happening. whenever you mistype a web address (say, www.yaho0o.com) from a machine behind e-smith, it returns the webpage in the primary 'ibay', instead of a dns error or somesuch. nslookup from the console fails such mistyped addresses, and squid and apaches configs look fine, so it's not anything that i'd expect. can you perhaps tell me what it might be??

thanks in advance,

zac
