Unable to boot from larger disk (disk upgrade)
« on: April 29, 2008, 10:55:13 AM »
I have a server that is happily running on a RAID1 with two 160G IDE disks. I needed more space and decided to upgrade as per described in the WIKI.

So I took out one of the 160G drives and replaced it with a new 750G IDE drive. The new drive was recognised and through the Manage Disk Redundancy I added it to the RAID and after a few hours it was sync'd to the old drive.

However, at that stage, I was expecting to be able to boot from the new drive when I would remove the 2nd 160G drive but it does not. It get to the point of booting and then at the point where the GRUB startup message normally appears, the screen goes blank and everything stops. No error message, nothing.

The drive is set as a master and I tried it on both IDE0 or IDE1 and various BIOS settings to no avail.

What am I missing?

As an update to the previous message, I can report that when I used the sync'd 750GB disk and through booting from the SME 7.3 disk and going through the upgrade from the CD (which only installed 5 updated packages) and updated the bootloader, the system now successfully restarted from the new disk and I was able to grow the volume to the full size as described in the WIKI.

Still not sure why the new drive sync'd to the old drive was not bootable.
