Kernel recompile required?
« on: February 11, 2008, 04:59:34 PM »
Hi,

I have the need for the CX88 (Video) module, but the stock kernel of SME Server 7.3 has this module not enabled. Is the _only_ way to recompile the kernel with the CX88 module enabled?

TIA

AFAIK no, you can compile only the module you need..

but you have to do it everytime you upgrade/change your kernel.

What about the Centos Plus kernel ?

For a 7.3 smp i686 system...

wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/centosplus/i386/RPMS/kernel-smp-2.6.9-67.0.1.EL.plus.c4.i686.rpm

And for a truck load of kernel modules...

wget ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/ftp.pramberger.at/systems/linux/contrib/rhel4/i686/kernel-smp-unsupported-2.6.9.67.0.1.EL-4.el4.pp.i686.rpm

Which includes..

Quote
/lib/modules/2.6.9-67.0.1.ELsmp/kernel/unsupported/drivers/media/video/cx88
/lib/modules/2.6.9-67.0.1.ELsmp/kernel/unsupported/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx8800.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.9-67.0.1.ELsmp/kernel/unsupported/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx88xx.ko

You take all the risk.

Perhaps file a bug with CentOS bugtracker and request it to be incorporated in the base of CentOS, that way it will also be supported by SME Server in the future.

Note that installing that kernel will break dialup internet access, PPTP vpn and appletalk file sharing.

Took that into account Charlie. Only took the correct module, which is good enough for home usage.

Hi I have the same problem as hf but I don't think my hardware is supported by the verion of the cx88xx in the standard or centosplus kernel.  I have a WinTV Nova-T card 9003 which is card type 18 but the cx88xx module only has 13 types listed.  Is it possible to patch the kernel source to the latest video4linux dvb drivers nad compile a module without breaking NAT etc?

Thanks
Norrie
