Trouble understanding qpsmtpd log output
« on: November 09, 2006, 03:42:46 PM »
Hi there,

I hope someone out there has more information for me, as my client is unable to receive email from this person, and it is completely beyond me what is happening. I have found the following 2 emails in the log files however these emails are not delivered to my customer. Can anyone tell me if they see anything wrong in these logs?

--ADDED--
After doing some more digging in the log, I have found entries sometime after the initial log entries...

HELP!!! Does anyone know how to read these logs???
« Reply #1 on: November 09, 2006, 08:42:29 PM »
The problem is now becoming bigger. More email is not making it through.

This is on a SME7 with only I think the User Vacation module installed. It is running in Server Only mode, and is behind a Sonicwall VPN/Firewall.

Can anyone help?

What does /var/log/qmail/current show? It seems your getting a 451 message.

I am unable to find any corresponding entries in the /var/log/qmail/current log file. I believe this is because it is never getting that far. The emails are not ever actually downloaded to the server.

You could try white-listing the sending email host.  This will selectively change the behavior of some of the subsequent qpsmtpd plugins, and might get your messages through...

To add a white-listed host:
config setprop qpsmtpd RequireResolvableFromHost yes
pico /var/service/qpsmtpd/config/whitelisthosts

(add the IP addresses you want to whitelist, one per line)
signal-event email-update

(Turning on "RequireResolvableFromHost enables the "whitelist_soft" plugin.  Also, there's no default template for "whitelisthosts" so your changes shouldn't disappear by themselves.  Ultimately, this should probably be templated and should use the configuration database...)

I can't think of any reason why this would solve your problem, but I can't think of much else to try.

I found some discussion of 451 Incomplete Data in Google, but nothing that looked relevant to your situation.

Thanks mmccarn,

I have tried as you recommended, and still have no luck. I guess my first question would be what exactly is a 451 Incomplete Data? Should I be seeing alot of these in the logs? I seem to have quite a few in the qpsmtpd logs, however the majority of them seem to be spam messages... Please advise.

One option seems to be a sending server that does not wait its turn during a "pipelined" smtp connection: http://beta.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.qpsmtpd/2006/04/msg4953.html

Another seems to be a malicious mail server *trying* to cause problems for some reason by sending "QUIT" immediately after "DATA": http://beta.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.qpsmtpd/2003/08/msg454.html

Is your server fast enough for SME 7?  I only recently realized that if you're doing spam filtering you're supposed to have a 1.5GHz P4 with at least 512MB of RAM...  You could try turning off DNSBL, RHSBL antivirus, spamd, etc.

Don't turn off DNSBL (RBL's) they are helping to reduce the spam filtering load on your CPU.
Be wary of turning on RHSBL.

Also enable pattern matching executable content blocking to stop crap getting in.

Server is a P4 - 3.2 Intel with a gig of dual channel...

One of the problem domains seems to be UPS.com.

I have tried to disable spamd, clamd, etc... It didn't solve the 451's

Thanks for these suggestions. I am retrying the steps you just mentioned. I have turned off virus scanning, spam blocking, and disabled RHSBL again, using

 /sbin/e-smith/config setprop qpsmtpd RHSBL disable

. I am not actually 100% sure I had disabled the RHSBL earlier, and have stopped virus and spam blocking from the Email settings page. Is that everything?

It means the sending site did not complete the sending of the message content, during the data phase of the SMTP transaction.

OK - with Spam and Clam turned off, and RHSBL disabled, I am still getting 451's however I am unsure if these are normal... Should I see any 451's from SPAM? Or is it always a bad thing to see.

Also, here is another valid email blocked. Does anyone see anything from this qpsmtpd log entry? Or is there another log I should be looking at?
