I hope that future releases will contain the possibillity to make backup on USB external drives.

Reason: cheapest ,nearly unlimited space and you can very ease to bring with you .

Tape drives are dead.

I have seen that this is nearly become standard in all the different "NAS" boxes on the market.

See: Synology Disk Station DS-101g+

I'm doing this now on 6.0.1. I have modified the do_backup script to use rsync. It only backs up the files that have changed since the last backup. I have a 250GB HDD in a USB2 enclosure. The one problem I had is that I had to rate-limit rsync to 10 Megabytes/sec, as if I let it run at full speed it would sometimes corrupt the disk. This is a problem with the USB support in the kernel, I think. It is still a helluvalot faster that tape though.

Very nice to know that is possible and i would be happy to get the scriptchanges you made.

I know the guys are working hard on the ver 7 release. this should solve the USB issue. I am hoping this form of backup become a standard part of future releases and a part of the web based menu system.

If this is going to be the case i think many more would use the exelent SME Server

This is an excellent idea. I’ll love to see this as part of SME.
