I don't know much about PrestShop, but here is what I know.

PrestShop seems to be most often compared with Magento as regards functionality, however, the impression I get is that it is regarded as 'second best'  -  SEO optimisation relative weakness is sometimes mentioned (an area where Magento is apparently strong). This is difficult to prove / disprove.

There is no doubt that there are some very successful high-volume PrestaShop e-commerce sites.

I know that if you employ a developer to set up and manage a Magento site it is multipe times more expensive than PrestaShop.

Other contenders in this space have to include ZenCart, OpenCart and CS-Cart IMHO.

What I do find interesting though is that I often see websites that are apparently evaluating the relative merits of e-commerce software unfairly (IMHO) ignoring PrestaShop. For example, on the following site the PrestaShop figures are lumped in with 'Others'(in the Top 100,000 category) when, in fact, PrestShop's figures that appear lower down the page show that it is one of the stronger e-commerce softwares and seems to be growing in users very respectably.

Are they suggesting that all the PrestaShop growth is in small, relatively unsuccessful e-commerce sites? It would appear so to me, however, there are no numbers to support this.

Let us not forget when looking at this page, that Tom Robertshaw is himself a Magento developer (I believe). In fact, I see that he mentions this himself lower down the page.

And look at this supposedly impartial (2015) evaluation - you would think that PrestaShop didn't exist (or Zen / OC / CS-C):

And on the following site, we read this:
https://askhivemind.com/blog/ecommerce-market-report-april-2015
"However, Prestashop has a stronger presence amongst the top 1 million sites hosted in Portugal, Spain, France and Poland. Overall, the Prestashop platform has seen no growth overall and in fact has been demoted below OpenCart in terms of popularity. "

...  In my opinion, this isn't a fair comment either. One of the reasons - over the last few months OpenCart has launched and put the finishing touches to it's very latest flagship software 'OpenCart 2.0' which has been much touted and hugely anticipated for, well, more than a year at least. So, not apples and apples. Also OpenCart costs nothing to get up and running whereas Presta, I understand needs more tech-savvy work.
