7.5-> 8.0 why is there no restore from desktop
« on: January 04, 2013, 04:25:38 PM »
I am migrating from sme 7 to 8 in vmware.

I made a backup to desktop from sme 7.5.1 fine.

But how do I get the backup restored on the sme 8.0???

Is it really true that I am supposed to set up a NAS, or troubleshoot windows smb sharing just to restore a simple backup?

Until 7.4 there was a restore from desktop, which would take 5 minutes.

Has anybody a script or something to restore in an easy way? For instance copy the sme.tgz with winscp to /root and then restore?

I am a firm believer in kiss. Sorry.

Burn the file to a USB memory stick or CDROM. I expect this is covered in the Documentation.

Or, more frequently, wouldn't work at all. Backup from desktop (i.e. over https) hasn't been a reliable option for a long time.

I am using sme under vmware. USB is difficult because usb in a vmware esxi server is difficult.
So I should burn to an iso, hope linux will read that iso (which has fialed for me in the past). And then I can only restore at one specific moment after re-installing sme 8.0.  Because once sme is configured I cannot restore from cdrom or usb (or did I mis that)

If you could restore from iso or file while running a configured sme it would be much easier to fully restore in a vmware environment:
- give sme temporary ip
- winscp to sme (ok you have to enable ssh acces)
- run script on tgz
- done

If it really is 'iso' format (standard), then SME server will read it. Or maybe you mean 'burn to optical media', in which case you might have issues depending on your media and drives. In a vmware environment, I would expect you would be using iso files, not discs, and you would have no problem.

That's all you need to do.

Mounting an iso file image should be easy for you with vmware. It is for me.

Yes, here:
http://wiki.contribs.org/Backup_server_config#Command_line_manual_Restore_from_USB_drive_or_memory_stick
Thanks, that will work.

It is not so much not being able to read reaources, it is being able to find what you need.
That has always to do with the search context in the head of the one searching and the structure in documentation
In short, I did not have a clue where to look.

Often documenation is not clear to the reader, where it is to the writer. Fact of life.
Reminding people to learn to read is as offending as reminding the writers to learn how to  write clearly.

In other words, I am glad to have found it now.

I will post in another thread for retrival, but I upgraded form 7.51 -> 8.0 in vmware esxi 4.1 with the following steps. Perhaps it can help someone.

restore smeX in vmware

1. Make backup from original server to desktop
2. install sme8.x from iso in vmware
    - do not use vmx network cards, but use e1000 nic's instead, see http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7197
    - log in via web-management console http://ip/server-manager and change remote acces so you can log in via ssh as root from internal network
3. install vmware tools, see http://wiki.contribs.org/VMware_Tools#SME_Server_8.0_Guest_on_ESXi_4.0_Update_1
################################ in my case
SME Server 8.0 Guest on ESXi 4.0 Update 1

Download the required packages
log in via ssh
cd /root
mkdir vmtools
cd vmtools

wget http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/4.0u1/rhel5/i686/vmware-open-vm-tools-kmod-8.0.2-208167.el5.i686.rpm
wget http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/4.0u1/rhel5/i686/vmware-open-vm-tools-common-8.0.2-208167.el5.i686.rpm
wget http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/4.0u1/rhel5/i686/vmware-open-vm-tools-nox-8.0.2-208167.el5.i686.rpm

Install the packages and dependencies (some dependencies might be downloaded, click Y)

/usr/bin/yum localinstall \
 vmware-open-vm-tools-kmod-8.0.2-208167.el5.i686.rpm \
 vmware-open-vm-tools-common-8.0.2-208167.el5.i686.rpm \
 vmware-open-vm-tools-nox-8.0.2-208167.el5.i686.rpm

Link the start script to run level 7

ln -fs /etc/rc.d/init.d/vmware-tools /etc/rc7.d/S90vmware-tools

Start the service

service vmware-tools start

(((((((((((((((((((( oeps, there is something wrong, must see into this later. Errors are:
# service vmware-tools start
#   Checking acpi hot plug                                  [  OK  ]

##########################################

4. update packages
- before update set yum straight
check if this is still needed here:
########## see http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,49362.0.html

yum clean all
rpm -Uhv \
http://mirror.canada.pialasse.com/releases/\
/8.0/smeupdates/i386/RPMS/smeserver-yum-2.2.0-20.el5.sme.noarch.rpm
signal-event yum-update

- update
yum update

it will make a list, say Y
wait while downloading lots of stuff & installing
signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

4. restore with backup
 - make a snapshot
 - copy sme.tzg to / directory new sme server (for instance form windows desktop with winscp (= cp via ssh) )
 - run comnmands below

cd /
signal-event pre-restore
tar -C / -xzvf smeserver.tgz
If you are replacing an original server that is still running,
shut it down before rebooting the new server

/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

After reboot login to admin-console to change IPs to suit network
If you are replacing an original server that is still running, shut it down before rebooting the new server

Save & Reboot

Delete backup file

cd /
rm smeserver.tgz

System should now be online & operational,
Run tests if all works:
- check email (send & retrieve)
- check connections & websites

Reminding people to learn to read is as offending as reminding the writers to learn how to  write clearly.

The feeling of "being offended" is only in the mind of the person thinking that way, & is a personal reaction to "something" (that someone may say or write or do etc), rather than a necessary automatic response.
If you choose not to be offended, then you will feel no offence.

To clarify, I did not mean "learn to read"...., I meant "learn", as in "adopt a habit of"...... reading resources.
Or to say it in the original format:
Please learn....."to read available resources".

The reason I said this is because many questions asked in these forums have already been answered, & those answers published, so had you looked in the appropriate place, you would have found the answer, which I assume would have been better/less time consuming for you. I was not picking on you personally, it was a statement made to educate all readers/users of these forums.

....and I did say please.

Quote
In short, I did not have a clue where to look.

I will post my "forum signature" here as an example:
An answer may already exist, click the Search link at top of page.
Please read the Wiki, Manuals, FAQ & Howtos linked at top of page.
Contribs can be found at http://wiki.contribs.org/Category:Contrib

These are all good places to look.

In this case had you familiarised yourself with the Howtos, which require no searching really to find them as there is a direct link at the top of the forums, then it would have been pretty easy to see there is an article to do with Backup.

Yes I do agree that some matters can be quite hard & time consuming to find answers for, given that there is so much information available, even just on the contribs.org site, let alone other sites etc.

Re your mini howto posted here in the forums, the best place to put this is in the Wiki, as a more easily found resource.
You already have Wiki & Doc Team access, so you could have created a new page/article very easily, probably in much the same time as it took you to post the mini howto twice in the forums. So please use that resource (ie the Wiki) in future for posting Howtos etc.
It's as simple as opening your browser to a (not already existing) URL like
http://wiki.contribs.org/vmware_esxi_upgrading_sme
or similar.

As you have found and/or stated, searching does not always lead to the answer, mini howtos & other tips can easily become "lost" in the thousands of forum posts, so creating a Wiki Howto article gives the information a chance of being "Categorized" & more easily found.

Well, a better way would be to adjust the wiki article you pointed at, and to adjust the usb section a bit to include copying a backup via winscp, or another scp client.
But I have no idea howto do that I am afraid and was afraid to brake things.

If you think it can help people I can add a wiki entry with restore by scp.
