Trying to install SME8 on Gigabyte H77M-D3H
« on: September 29, 2012, 11:07:56 AM »
Hello,

I'm trying to install SME8 on a machine with Gigabyte H77M-D3H which have an Intel Raid card controller with 2xSSD disks mounted in raid.

Install process run fine for copying the files but at reboot the system seems not to be able to mount the raid controller and is unable to mount /dev/root or I suppose any drive (I can't see it goes too fast) and stop with a Kernel panic - not syncing.

How do you think I can manage it ?

Thanks,

David

It seems to come from the raid driver so I found the solution to install with the startup option

sme raid=none
Now it seems to run fine, and it's probably not a problem as the raid is hardware ?

The RAID wiki http://wiki.contribs.org/Raid should help, it has some notes on motherboard raid. I followed the advice and use the SME software Raid, it works.

I changed motherboard to try anotherone. Now I have an ASUS P8H67-M which is a bit older. It's based on the H67 chipset, but I still have the same problem (it seems to be also an intel raid chipset but older).

At install if I run install without any specification or with raid=1 parameter it install everything and at reboot system is unable to mount /dev/root and kernel panic.

If I specify at install raid=none it works perfectly but I don't think raid is up ?

An idea ?
Thanks,

David

don't use motherboard's native raid feature, disable it

Hello Stefano,

Thanks for the answer. I tried, but when I disable RAID mode on the bios and put AHCI instead, the installation run fine, install everything without giving any error, but at reboot, I don't even have the grub starting (system doesn'r boot).

I'm going to try to install also with raid=none on the AHCI mode to try.

Thanks,

David

Ok my fault. I forgot to unmount raid into bios. It had left some partitions which I could'nt delete.
Problem solved thanks.

I'm using SME software RAID and it's running just fine.
