GPT Partitioning Scheme (was: new install on new hardware)
« on: November 18, 2011, 01:11:47 AM »
I am having a heck of a time trying to install to some new hardware, mainly some new format 3tb disks, I am trying to install to 3 3tb disks in raid 5 using "sme raid=5 nospare multipart" but I keep getting errors about not being able to boot gpt disks. just to test I installed windows 7 and it works just fine. I only have 4 sata ports, and cant figure out how to boot sme  install from a usb drive so I haven't been able to test if I had another disk to install on and just put /home on the raid 5.

Do any of you have any suggestions? My other thought was to use ESXi and run freenas and pfsense on the same box, but that is turning out out be complicated as well.

Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-H61M-DS2
CPU Intel Pentium G620
Ram CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB
Hard Drives Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRX 3TB
NIC Intel EXPI9400PTBLK Gigabit Copper Connection for Servers
and I will toss in a 200GB boot drive

Hi chaps

Just came across this issue with 3GB SATA drives. Having read the bug fix, it says won't fix? so does that mean we cannot use 3TB or larger disks that use GPT?

Drift.
Infamy, Infamy, they all have it in for me!

At this stage, and based on Redhat bug resolution (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=467848) GPT partitioning is not supported in CentOs 5, hence SME8, regardless of the size of the hard drive.  GPT partitioning is partly supported in SME7, the system will install OK but the total useable size of all partitions will be limited to 2TB.

Note: summary changed to include reference to current issue.

I have started a new thread http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,49133.msg244974.html#msg244974 which is perhaps relevant.
This, too, will pass ;)
